Creating Screen-Free Family Traditions That Actually Stick

A screen-free family tradition is most likely to last when it is simple, predictable and chosen by the people who will do it. Anchor a small shared activity to a familiar moment—such as dinner, bedtime or a weekend morning—then adapt it as schedules, ages and interests change. It does not need to be elaborate to become part of family life.

What makes a family tradition stick?

The useful distinction is not between a big tradition and a small one, but between an activity that fits ordinary family life and one that is hard to repeat. The American Academy of Pediatrics describes family rituals as activities that become a regular, predictable and integral part of family life. Its guidance on family rituals includes conversation, recreation, reading aloud, singing, holiday activities and other shared pursuits.

For a practical starting point, CDC parenting guidance says routines work best when they are consistent, predictable and followed through on, while matching a child’s understanding and capabilities. That is a design principle, not a guarantee that any particular tradition will last. Start with an activity your family actually wants to repeat, and make its ordinary-week version manageable.

How to build a tradition into the week

  1. Attach it to an existing cue. Pair the activity with something that already happens: a short walk after dinner, reading before bed, a Friday meal or a Sunday puzzle. CDC recommends beginning with important activities such as meals, bedtime or mornings. See CDC’s tips for building structure.
  2. Make the first version small. Choose something you can still do when time or energy is limited. A conversation around the table or a brief story can be easier to repeat than a long outing. The sources do not prescribe a minimum duration; the point is to choose a realistic format.
  3. Let children help shape it. Offer a few suitable choices and let children pick the activity, theme or role. Sesame Workshop recommends involving children and choosing traditions the family wants to maintain. Its advice on creating family traditions also supports adapting them to children’s interests and circumstances.
  4. Give it a recognizable cue. A recurring day, meal or short opening action—such as everyone choosing a song before dinner—helps family members know what to expect. Keep the cue stable even if the activity changes.
  5. Agree on the device-free part together. Decide where phones go during the activity and have adults follow the same rule. The AAP recommends screen-free opportunities for family time and other healthy activities, including device-free mealtimes and bedrooms, tailored to family needs. See its policy statement on digital ecosystems. Sesame Workshop also offers practical suggestions for device-free family moments.
  6. Allow a short version and a restart. If a full activity will not fit, do a smaller version that keeps the familiar cue: read one page, take a short walk or play one round. If you miss a week, simply resume at the next usual opportunity rather than treating the gap as failure. This is practical advice for flexibility, not a tested recovery method.

Choose an activity that fits your family

UNICEF’s screen-free activity ideas are grouped by age, but age is only a starting point. Consider mobility, sensory needs, available space, safety and whether everyone actually enjoys the activity. The options below are menus, not prescriptions.

Age group Possible activities Ways to make it work
Toddlers and preschoolers (1–4) Act out animals, look for cloud shapes, make sock puppets, create a family band with safe household objects or dress up. Keep instructions simple; supervise small objects and choose a pace that suits young children.
Young children (5–8) Take a nature walk, try a child-safe scavenger hunt or “I spy,” build a story together, or play hide-and-seek with clear boundaries. Let children suggest what to look for or contribute the next part of the story.
Adolescents (9–12) Play statues, make an obstacle course, teach a parent’s childhood game, try a drawing-guessing game, or grow herbs or vegetables. Offer a choice between active and quieter options, and adapt the space and rules.
Teens (13–18) Start a reading club, make a vision board, host family Olympics, cook a chosen dish together or hold a family game night. Give teens real input into the activity and its format rather than making participation feel like a younger-child assignment.

Other low-equipment options include a regular conversation prompt at dinner, reading or singing aloud, and shared recreation. A board game or puzzle can be part of a game night, but neither is required for a screen-free tradition; AAP guidance lists games among possible family recreation, and UNICEF suggests a board game or puzzle for family play.

Compare ideas by repeatability, not by supposed effectiveness

No source establishes a single best activity or shows that one kind of family tradition works better than another. Before settling on an idea, consider how it performs in your actual week:

What studies can—and cannot—tell us

The American Psychological Association’s 2002 summary of a review of 32 studies reported associations between family routines and rituals and outcomes including marital satisfaction, adolescents’ sense of personal identity, children’s health and academic achievement, and stronger family relationships. Those associations do not prove that starting a new screen-free tradition causes any of those outcomes. The summary also distinguishes routines from rituals and notes that intervention studies had not yet been conducted for the specific proposition that regular family mealtimes with responsive, respectful communication would benefit participants.

CDC’s structure guidance offers practical routine-building principles, while UNICEF and Sesame Workshop provide activity ideas and family advice. They are not comparative trials showing which tradition is most effective or most likely to last. Use the guidance to make a tradition easier to repeat, not as a promise of a particular result.
