Commanders Say Chig Okonkwo Will Return for Week 4 vs. Colts

Washington said tight end Chig Okonkwo will be back in the lineup against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Oct. 4, after a good week of practice. The statement, reported by the Commanders on Oct. 2, confirms the team’s plan—not a guaranteed snap count or workload.

What Washington said about Okonkwo’s Week 4 status

On Oct. 2, the Commanders reported that head coach Dan Quinn said Okonkwo and linebacker Frankie Luvu “will both be back in the lineup after a good week of practice.” That is the clearest available answer on Okonkwo’s availability for the Week 4 game against Indianapolis. Washington’s report reflects the team’s statement; it is not an independent medical clearance or confirmation that Okonkwo had already played.

What the injury report shows

Washington’s Sept. 30 injury report listed Okonkwo with a hamstring injury and limited participation in the Wednesday and Thursday practice sessions shown. The published report left the Friday practice and game-status cells blank. It therefore does not show full participation or a formal game designation. The team’s injury report provides the practice detail, while Quinn’s later statement supplies the return-to-lineup update.

Why he had missed time

The hamstring issue had kept Okonkwo out in the preceding weeks. Washington ruled him out against Dallas on Sept. 18 after he did not practice Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. On Sept. 25, the team described him as unlikely to play against Seattle after missed practices and said staff would consult medical personnel before making a final decision. The Week 2 update and the Week 3 report document those earlier decisions.

What his return does—and does not—say about his role

Washington’s unofficial Week 4 depth chart lists Okonkwo first at tight end, ahead of Ben Sinnott. That indicates his place on the team’s chart, but it does not establish how many snaps he will play or how many targets he will receive. The team has not reported a workload projection, snap count, or target share.

Quinn highlighted Okonkwo’s speed as a vertical option at tight end: “From Chig, from a vertical standpoint in the passing game, you feel his speed at tight end.” That describes a trait the coach values; it is not a forecast of production. The Oct. 2 team report also noted that Washington’s tight ends had combined for 60 receiving yards on eight catches through three games. Those figures are team totals, not Okonkwo’s individual statistics.

Fantasy football takeaway

For a fantasy lineup decision, treat Okonkwo as available according to Washington’s Oct. 2 announcement, but do not read that as evidence of a full workload after the hamstring absence. The team has not supplied a snap or target projection, so the announcement alone cannot support a confident volume-based forecast. Check for any later team update before kickoff and weigh your alternatives using the role and workload information available then.
