Why Binks’s Scotland debut mattered to his family
Binks made his debut against Switzerland at Hampden, where he experienced “Flower of Scotland” as a player for the first time. In a post-match interview published by The National (Scotland) and carried by Inkl on October 1, 2026, he said the occasion was something he had worked toward for a long time: “Personally, it’s a very proud moment. Obviously something I’ve worked towards forever.”
The Scotland connection came through his late grandfather. Binks said his family travelled to the match, and that his mother would likely put his first Scotland shirt on the wall. He described the family significance as another special moment for him and his mother, adding: “It will stick with me forever.”
How the match turned against Scotland
The interview account says Scotland had started reasonably well before the match changed early. Jack Hendry was sent off after bringing down Dan Ndoye, and Switzerland scored from the resulting free kick within 12 minutes. Binks called the dismissal and goal a “sucker punch.” He also noted that Switzerland’s three goals came from set pieces.

Those match details are reported in The National’s interview account; they have not been independently verified here against an official match record. Binks’s personal milestone and the team’s difficult night were distinct parts of his assessment: he valued the debut, but did not disguise the disappointment with the result.
Binks backed Hendry after the sending-off
Binks said he did not think Hendry needed to apologise. He described teammates as being around and supporting him, framing the incident as the kind of risk that can come with football. As a defender himself, Binks said he felt particular sympathy for Hendry.

Binks described the Scotland group as young and hungry, while cautioning against judging a new international side too quickly. Unlike club teams, national squads do not train together every day, and he said the players have limited time to build understanding. He remained positive about the group and Pocognoli, but said progress would take time.

“It’s hard to judge this early on, because it’s different to club football where you’re every day on the pitch,” Binks said. He added: “This is another thing that will take time, but I’m sure we’ll get to where we want to get to.”
He also acknowledged that supporters wanted a win in Scotland’s next match. His point was not to dismiss that expectation: the players, he said, had to go out and earn it.
