A good 24-hour Melbourne visit is a compact CBD day: brunch and coffee, one or two cultural stops, a walk through the laneways, then dinner and a pub or rooftop drink. Add Queen Victoria Market only if it is open on your visit date. For dancing, choose from current event listings rather than expecting a rave to happen every night.
What can you do in Melbourne in 24 hours?
Keep the route flexible and choose one main cultural stop before deciding whether you have time for a second. The central options around Fed Square and the CBD make a tighter day; Melbourne Museum is in Carlton Gardens, farther north. Visit Victoria’s one-day itinerary and 48-hour guide offer a similar broad arc from coffee and city sights to dinner and drinks.
- Morning: Start with brunch or coffee in the CBD.
- Late morning: Visit one gallery or museum, then take a short street-art walk through Hosier Lane.
- Early afternoon: Go to Queen Victoria Market if its hours match your date; otherwise, use the time for another city stop or the gardens.
- Evening: Have dinner in Chinatown or elsewhere in the CBD, followed by a pub or rooftop drink.
- Late night: If you want to dance, select a date-specific event and plan your return trip before you go.
Where should you go for brunch and coffee?
Choose a CBD stop to keep the first part of the day close to the central sights. Visit Victoria names Higher Ground as a breakfast option in its longer itinerary and lists coffee or pastry stops including Market Lane, Dukes, Lune and Agathé in its one-day guide. These are examples, not confirmation of service on a particular date, so check the venue’s current hours before setting out.
Which museum or gallery fits a short visit?
Pick according to your interests, location and available time rather than trying to cover every major institution. A single focused visit leaves room for the laneways and evening plans.

| Option | Location fit | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|
| NGV International | Central city itinerary | Visit Victoria includes it among its one-day cultural stops; check current exhibitions and visiting information in the official itinerary. |
| ACMI | Fed Square | A compact option within the central route, listed by Visit Victoria; check current exhibitions and hours in the official itinerary. |
| State Library Victoria | CBD | Another central cultural stop named in Visit Victoria’s one-day guide. |
| Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia | Fed Square | Listed in Visit Victoria’s wider Melbourne attractions coverage; consider it if Australian art is a priority. See the 48-hour guide. |
| Melbourne Museum | Carlton Gardens, north of the central cluster | Choose it if its exhibitions are your priority and you can allow for the extra journey. The location is identified in Visit Victoria’s one-day guide. |
Hosier Lane makes a brief outdoor addition near the central sights. Treat it as a short street-art walk, not a substitute for a museum visit.
When is Queen Victoria Market open?
Queen Victoria Market is a useful daytime option only when its schedule fits your visit. Its visitor listing gives the following regular hours and does not list Monday or Wednesday opening hours:

Should you visit the gardens instead?
Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, Melbourne Gardens, offers a different kind of afternoon from a market or museum visit. Visit Victoria says the collection includes more than 8,500 plant species, with the figure given on its one-day itinerary (the page does not state a year). The gardens and Queen Victoria Market are not adjacent, so allow for travel time if you plan to include either one alongside central attractions.

How should you get around?
For central stops, the Free Tram Zone can simplify short trips. Visit Victoria says the City Circle Tram takes around an hour to complete a loop and runs approximately every 12 minutes from 9:30 am to 5 pm daily, except Christmas Day and Good Friday; these figures are from its visitor itinerary, which does not state a publication year. Confirm current service details before relying on the loop for a timed connection.
For an actual journey, use the Transport Victoria journey planner and check service notices. Visit Victoria’s public transport guide says the Night Network provides all-night metropolitan trains and trams on weekends, with late-night buses; standard myki fares apply. Those broad details do not guarantee service at a particular stop or on a specific night. The 2026 Official Visitor Map, produced by Visit Victoria with the City of Melbourne and Transport Victoria, includes transport maps and attraction information.

Where should you go for dinner and a drink?
Visit Victoria suggests Chinatown for dumplings and names Siglo, HER Bar and Naked For Satan as rooftop options in its one-day itinerary. Its 48-hour guide also names Section 8 and Whitehart Bar as late-night laneway bars. Treat these as starting points for your own date-specific plans: the itineraries do not establish current opening hours, capacity or entry requirements.
How do you find late-night dancing or a rave?
A particular rave is not a reliable nightly stop. The official itineraries support late-night bar options, but do not confirm an event on an unspecified date. Check current Melbourne event listings and the event organiser’s details before committing to a venue.
