Rory O’Connor’s family and friends paid tribute to the 17-year-old at his funeral in Athea, County Limerick, remembering his close bond with his sister Becky, his love of hurling and the time he shared with his father. The Irish Examiner reported that Rory died after being struck by a van in Listowel after 3am on 28 September 2026, hours after celebrating his 17th birthday.
What happened at Rory O’Connor’s funeral?
Requiem Mass for Rory was held at St Bartholomew’s Church in Athea. He was buried afterwards at Holycross Cemetery, also in Athea, according to the Irish Examiner’s report of 1 October 2026.
Family, friends, classmates and neighbours gathered to remember him. Mourners heard that Rory had gone out to celebrate his birthday at the Listowel Races before the collision in Listowel.
Becky O’Connor remembered her brother’s bond with her
Rory’s sister Becky described their relationship as irreplaceable and spoke about the loss she would carry. “Our bond is something I will never replace, and it’s something I’ll mourn for the rest of my life. Rory came into my life when I was five, and we spent the last 17 years helping each other navigate life, and now I have to navigate life without him,” she said.
