It is part of the central nervous system, working with the spinal cord and the body’s pathways to interpret sensation, guide movement and behavior, support thought, and regulate bodily functions. Its major structures offer a useful map—but brain functions emerge from connected cells and networks.
What does the brain do?
The brain receives information from the body and the outside world, helps interpret it, and coordinates responses. Those responses can be voluntary, such as reaching for an object, or automatic, such as regulating essential bodily functions. The spinal cord and pathways throughout the body carry signals to and from the brain, so its work is part of a larger nervous system rather than a process happening in isolation. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) introduces the brain as part of this connected system.
What are the main parts of the brain?
The cerebrum and its lobes
The cerebrum is the largest brain division and is associated with higher-order processing and voluntary behavior. Its two hemispheres communicate through a thick bundle of nerve fibers called the corpus callosum. The folded outer sheet of the cerebrum is the cerebral cortex.
Introductory diagrams divide the cortex into four lobes. Their names help locate broad areas and common associations:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Region | Broad association | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Frontal lobe | Planning and movement | These are broad roles, not abilities confined to one isolated area. |
| Parietal lobe | Integrating sensory information | Its contribution is part of wider processing across the brain. |
| Temporal lobe | Auditory processing and memory-related structures | The label identifies an anatomical region, not a single-purpose module. |
| Occipital lobe | Vision | Visual processing still depends on communication among brain areas. |
These are useful orientation points, not a one-lobe/one-ability map. Sensation, movement, memory, and behavior depend on interactions among brain regions. For an introductory anatomy overview, see the Society for Neuroscience’s “Mapping the Brain” and its Brain Facts: A Primer on the Brain and Nervous System.
Structures beneath the cortex
Several structures beneath the cortex help route information and regulate body state. The thalamus relays much sensory information toward the cortex. The hypothalamus helps regulate drives and functions related to the body’s internal state. These are broad descriptions of their roles, not a complete account of everything they do.

The brainstem and cerebellum
The brainstem links the brain with the spinal cord. Its midbrain, pons, and medulla contribute to relaying information, reflexes, and vital automatic functions. The cerebellum contributes to the coordination and timing of movement and is also implicated in some cognitive functions. NINDS’s Know Your Brain brochure and the Society for Neuroscience primer provide introductory summaries of these structures.
How do brain cells work together?
Neurons communicate information, while glial cells support nervous-system function. Neurons use electrical activity within cells and chemical signaling at synapses—the contact points where cells communicate—to pass signals through connected groups of cells called circuits. Many circuits interact to support sensation, action, memory, and other functions; a single cell or structure is not a full explanation of a complex behavior.

Learning and experience are associated with changes in neural connections and circuits. That is a general account of how the brain can adapt, not a promise that a particular exercise, game, supplement, or device will produce a specific change. The Society for Neuroscience’s Brain Facts primer offers a starting point for learning more about cells and communication.
When is the brain fully developed?
Brain development begins before birth. The first months and years of life are a period of particularly rapid growth, but development does not stop after infancy: connections and organization continue to change through childhood and adolescence and into later maturation. BrainFacts’ overview of the first years of life describes early development, while its article on when the brain “starts adulting” discusses maturation beyond childhood.

There is no single age that marks a universal finish line for every brain function. Different systems and abilities follow different developmental trajectories, so a claim that the whole brain is “fully developed” at one exact age oversimplifies the process.
