The list includes Hap’s Pit Barbecue, which had served the Valley for more than 30 years, alongside local branches of larger chains and long-running neighborhood spots. This is a dated roundup, not a live directory: closure status and remaining-location counts below reflect what the publication reported at that time.
Which Phoenix-area restaurants closed?
The closures span Phoenix and surrounding Valley communities, including Glendale, Chandler, Scottsdale, Mesa, and Litchfield Park. The details below are reported by Phoenix New Times on August 6, 2025; they should not be read as independently verified current operating status.
Long-running Valley restaurants
- Hap’s Pit Barbecue: The barbecue restaurant closed in mid-July after serving the Valley for more than 30 years. Its history ran from a homemade smoker and cart outside the family car dealership, to a food truck, and finally a storefront at Washington and 48th streets.
- Sizzler: The Maryvale restaurant at Indian School Road and 51st Avenue closed after more than 40 years, according to the roundup. It was described as the Valley’s last Sizzler; the only Arizona location remaining at publication was in Flagstaff.
- Seafood Market & Restaurant: The Mesa restaurant and fish market at Village Square in Dana Park closed after serving customers since 1991. The restaurant served seafood, steak, pasta, and salads, while the market sold raw fish for home cooking.
- Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant: The Chandler location closed abruptly after two decades. Phoenix New Times reported that one Arizona location remained, in Peoria.
Pizza, sushi, and other dining spots
- La Piazza al Forno: The Glendale Neapolitan-style pizzeria opened in 2007 and expanded to two other Valley locations before returning to its original location during the pandemic. After its owners went their separate ways, the original restaurant closed.
- Moto Sushi: The pan-Asian restaurant and beer bar on 16th Street, just south of Glendale Avenue, closed. Its menu included sushi, pho, curry, dumplings, and Thai- and Japanese-style noodles.
- MOD Pizza: The Arcadia location on Indian School Road closed; other Valley locations remained open, according to the August 2025 report.
- Birdcall: The location at Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard closed. Other Valley locations remained in Phoenix and Gilbert, and the chain also operated in Colorado and Texas.
- Preston’s Steakhouse: The north Scottsdale restaurant in The Citadel shopping plaza on Pinnacle Peak Road closed after more than 10 years. The roundup attributed the closure to upcoming building repairs, citing an announcement on the restaurant’s website.
- Drunk Munk: The Old Town Scottsdale bar, restaurant, and patio closed. The space had previously housed Cowboy Ciao for more than two decades; Drunk Munk opened there in 2019.
Barbecue, live music, and beer
- West Alley BBQ & Smokehouse: The downtown Chandler Tennessee-style barbecue restaurant and live-music venue closed after seven years.
- T.C.B.C. Beer: The Litchfield Park brewery closed after its lease at the Honeysuckle Street location was not renewed, according to an announcement by its owners. The business had moved there in 2021.
Which closures affected only one location?
Several names on the list were local branches rather than chain-wide shutdowns. The 2025 roundup said MOD Pizza still had other Valley locations, Birdcall remained in Phoenix and Gilbert, and Abuelo’s still had an Arizona location in Peoria. By contrast, Sizzler’s Maryvale restaurant was described as the last Valley location, though a Flagstaff location remained in Arizona.
What reasons were reported?
The roundup gave specific explanations for two closures: upcoming building repairs at Preston’s Steakhouse and a lease that was not renewed for T.C.B.C. Beer. It did not establish causes for the other closures, so no broader explanation should be assumed.
