The main functional evidence comes from mice and cells, not people: the findings do not show that changing meal times, eating a particular diet or using cold exposure causes weight loss.
What is SLC25A34?
SLC25A34 is an orphan mitochondrial transporter: a protein in the mitochondrial carrier family whose function is not fully established. A 2026 paper in Science reports that it is involved in lipid metabolism in brown adipose tissue, or brown fat. The study was led by researchers at the University of Copenhagen’s Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research with international collaborators. The Broad Institute publication record lists the paper as volume 394, issue 6819, article eadz4797 (DOI: 10.1126/science.adz4797), with Iuliia Karavaeva as first author and Zachary Gerhart-Hines as corresponding author.
How do the body clock, temperature and diet relate to the transporter?
In brown fat, SLC25A34 expression was reported to respond to several signals. The circadian repressor REV-ERBα regulates its expression, while PPARα-linked responses connect it to lipolytic signals, dietary fat and cold. These findings suggest that daily timing and environmental or nutritional cues converge on the same protein in this tissue; they do not show that deliberately changing any of those cues will manipulate the transporter in people.
The University of Copenhagen reported that SLC25A34 levels in mouse brown fat rose 90-fold after 24 hours in cold. This is a measured expression change in mouse tissue under that exposure, not a human fat-loss result or evidence that cold exposure is a treatment.

What role might SLC25A34 play in fat metabolism?
The researchers propose that SLC25A34 imports oxaloacetate into mitochondria. In their model, that movement helps maintain metabolite exchange that supports cytosolic acetyl-CoA production, lipid synthesis and mitochondrial lipid oxidation. The proposed mechanism offers an explanation for how fat building and fat breakdown could be coordinated with thermogenic metabolism.
That transport step has not been directly demonstrated: the University of Copenhagen account says researchers have not directly observed SLC25A34 transporting oxaloacetate. It is therefore more accurate to describe oxaloacetate transport as the study’s proposed mechanism, not a confirmed function.

What evidence supports the findings—and what does it establish?
| Evidence type | What was reported | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse experiments | Researchers studied SLC25A34 across temperature and diet conditions and switched it off in brown fat. The fat-burning response was weaker when the transporter was absent. | Supports a functional role in experimental mice; does not establish a human treatment or weight-loss effect. |
| Cultured brown-fat cells | Lowering transporter levels changed oxaloacetate distribution, lipid synthesis, oxygen consumption and expression of fuel-burning genes. | Shows cellular effects under experimental conditions; does not show what would happen after a consumer changes diet or routine. |
| Human donor-derived cells | Cells grown from four donors were tested. Lowering SLC25A34 reduced fuel-burning capacity in three donors and dampened energy-expenditure-related genes in all four. | Provides limited human-cell evidence, not a clinical trial or proof of benefit in people. |
| Pooled human tissue data | An analysis of data from 24 clinical studies found associations between higher SLC25A34 levels in subcutaneous white fat and several more favorable metabolic markers. The same association was not found in fat around abdominal organs. | Shows observational associations in one fat depot, not cause and effect. The 24 studies were not intervention trials of SLC25A34. |
The experiments lowering transporter levels and switching it off support a role in the models studied. They do not settle whether changing SLC25A34 would improve metabolic health or body weight over time; long-term effects of transporter loss on weight and metabolic health have not been tested, according to the University of Copenhagen account.
Does this study show that meal timing or diet causes weight loss?
No. The study connects circadian and dietary signals to SLC25A34 expression and examines its role in fat metabolism, primarily in experimental systems. It does not test a meal-timing plan, establish a weight-loss effect in people, or show that eating a high-fat diet, changing meal timing, using cold exposure or taking a supplement will produce fat loss. No supplement, consumer device or other product is established by these findings as a way to manipulate the transporter.

Why the finding matters—and what remains unknown
The study brings circadian regulation, responses to food and cold, and mitochondrial metabolism into one mechanistic account of brown fat. If future work establishes how SLC25A34 works and whether it can be safely targeted, it could inform research into metabolic therapies. That possibility is not the same as a current treatment: human evidence remains limited to cells from four donors and observational tissue associations, while a clinical benefit has not been demonstrated.
The study also leaves open what SLC25A34 does in other tissues. Karavaeva noted that it is highly expressed in the heart, but its role there remains unknown. The 2026 paper is a mechanistic research finding, not a basis for medical or weight-loss advice.
