Why Helium Has Red and Blue Lines in Its Spectrum

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Helium produces both red and blue spectral lines because its electrons can move between several quantized energy levels, releasing photons at different wavelengths. A spectroscope separates those wavelengths into bright lines, and each line appears at a characteristic color. The title’s “little dots” are best understood as those bright lines—not literal colored dots inside a helium atom.

What helium’s red and blue “dots” represent

A spectrum is a display of light arranged by wavelength. When helium gas emits light, it does not produce every wavelength equally: it emits photons at particular wavelengths, which appear as separate bright lines against a darker background. Those lines form part of an element’s spectral signature. NASA Science explains that “Every element has a unique set of absorption and emission lines, or spectral signature” (NASA Science).

So the red and blue marks are different parts of helium’s emission-line pattern. They are not evidence that one helium atom is simultaneously “red” and “blue”; the colors describe the wavelengths of photons emitted by atoms in different transitions.

Why helium emits more than one color

Electrons in an atom occupy allowed energy states rather than an unbroken range of energies. When an electron moves from a higher-energy state to a lower one, the atom can emit a photon whose energy equals the difference between those states. A different pair of states has a different energy difference, so it produces a photon with a different wavelength.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Photon energy and wavelength are linked: shorter wavelengths have higher energy. Within visible light, blue light has a shorter wavelength and greater photon energy than red light. NASA’s classroom material uses this wavelength–frequency–energy relationship to explain spectral lines (NASA Imagine the Universe: Graphing Spectra worksheet).

Examples of helium’s visible lines

NASA Imagine the Universe’s teaching table gives approximate wavelengths and colors for several helium lines. These rounded values are useful for seeing the spread across the visible spectrum, not for precision line identification.

469 nm Blue
472 nm Blue
493 nm Blue-green

505 nm Blue-green
587 nm Yellow
669 nm Red

The same NASA table lists the 469 nm line at 6.40 × 1014 Hz and 4.24 × 10-19 J, and the 669 nm line at 4.48 × 1014 Hz and 2.97 × 10-19 J (NASA Imagine the Universe: Graphing Spectra solution). These paired examples show why the blue line has higher photon energy than the red one: its wavelength is shorter.

Why precision references distinguish He I and He II

For classroom comparisons, rounded wavelength and color labels are enough to illustrate the pattern. For identifying a line precisely, use a line reference such as NIST’s Strong Lines of Helium, which lists wavelengths and identifies the emitting species. He I denotes neutral helium; He II denotes singly ionized helium, a helium atom that has lost one electron. The distinction matters because their spectral lines come from different atomic systems.

How to read a helium spectrum

  1. Look for separate lines. Each bright line represents light concentrated at a particular wavelength, rather than a broad, continuous band.
  2. Relate position to color. Shorter visible wavelengths lie toward the blue end; longer wavelengths lie toward the red end.
  3. Use the line pattern, not one color alone. Several lines together provide a more informative elemental signature than a single red or blue mark.
  4. Check the species and reference precision. Classroom tables round values; a precision identification should use a tabulated line reference and distinguish He I from He II.
