Colm O’Regan: Smart Devices Are Here to Stay, Even If They’re a Bit Too Clever for Their Own Good

Smart devices may offer handy shortcuts, but their reliance on software, cloud services and data sharing can make simple household tasks feel more complicated. In his 2 October 2026 Irish Examiner column, Cork comedian, author, broadcaster and podcaster Colm O’Regan makes that case with humour—and concludes, “So it’s a no from me to smart home tech.”

What is Colm O’Regan’s argument about smart devices?

O’Regan is skeptical of adding connectivity and software to ordinary household objects when the basic task may already be easy to do without them. His concern is not that every connected product is useless; it is that convenience can come with new dependencies, including updates, internet access and decisions about what information a device collects.

The column is opinion and comic commentary, not a technical investigation or product review. Its examples illustrate O’Regan’s worries; they do not establish how common device failures are or quantify privacy risks.

Can a software update brick a smart fridge?

O’Regan opens with a headline he paraphrases as “Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges.” Firmware is software that runs a device, and “bricking” describes a device made unusable. The column says an update broke fridges and food spoiled, but it gives no model, incident count, technical explanation, company statement or independent confirmation. Treat the Samsung example as a claim recounted in the column, not as a verified account of a documented widespread failure. Irish Examiner, 2 October 2026.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The general point is easier to separate from that specific account: a connected appliance can depend on software in ways a conventional one may not. That introduces a possible failure route—an update or service issue—alongside the familiar mechanical and electrical ones. The column does not establish the likelihood of such a failure for any particular fridge.

What might a smart fridge do—and what is the simpler alternative?

The column imagines a fridge that alerts you when milk is running low, adds it to a shopping list or reminds you about expiry dates. Those features can reduce a small amount of household admin. O’Regan’s counterpoint is practical: opening the fridge and looking inside already answers some of the same questions.

That is an argument about whether a feature earns its complexity, not a tested comparison between smart and conventional refrigerators. A useful way to assess any connected appliance is to ask:

  • Benefit: Does the feature solve a recurring task you actually have?
  • Connectivity: Does the core appliance still work if the internet or a remote service is unavailable?
  • Software support: Does the product depend on updates or an ongoing service for functions you expect to keep using?
  • Privacy: What information does it collect or share, and are those trade-offs acceptable to you?
  • Simplicity: Would a basic appliance or an existing habit accomplish the same thing?

Why does the column raise cars, toilets and toothbrushes?

O’Regan extends his concern about remote control to cloud-connected cars, imagining a vehicle being disabled remotely and mentioning cars disabled when payments lapse in America. The column supplies no source or legal details for that claim, so it should not be taken here as a verified account or generalized to other countries.

He also points to an anticipated “smart toilet” using cameras, sensors and AI to analyze bodily output, and a toothbrush said to “smell your breath” and offer gut-health information. No product names or studies are given. These are examples in the column, not evidence that a particular product exists, works as described or provides reliable health information.

What are the downsides of smart home devices?

The column’s examples point to three broad concerns, without measuring their scale:

Are smart devices here to stay?

O’Regan’s answer is yes, even though he personally resists smart home technology. The column suggests that devices can start as luxuries or novelties and become harder to avoid as connected features spread. Its closing stance remains a personal comic judgment, not a prediction supported by market data or expert consensus.

For readers deciding whether a smart feature is worthwhile, the useful question is narrower than whether smart technology is good or bad: does this particular feature solve a real problem well enough to justify its connectivity, software dependence and data-sharing implications?
