How to Build a Pocket-Sized Thermal Camera with the AMG8833

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can build a compact thermal viewer with Panasonic’s AMG8833, an I2C controller, and a display. The important limitation: the sensor measures just 64 temperature points in an 8 × 8 grid. Software can enlarge and smooth that grid on screen, but it cannot create additional measured detail.

What the AMG8833 thermal viewer can—and cannot—show

The AMG8833 is a passive infrared array sensor, not a conventional image sensor. Panasonic specifies 64 infrared pixels arranged as an 8 × 8 matrix, a 60° viewing angle, and a 3.3 V operating voltage. Each cell reports a temperature reading; the controller can map those readings to colors to make a thermal image.

With only 64 measured points, the viewer is useful for broad heat patterns and presence detection, not facial features, fine objects, or detailed inspection. Interpolation can make transitions between the cells look smoother, but the apparent extra pixels are estimates rather than new sensor measurements. Adafruit’s guide says the sensor can detect a human up to 7 m away; that is a detection-distance claim, not a claim that a person will appear with recognizable detail at that range. See Adafruit’s AMG8833 guide and Panasonic’s product specifications.

AMG8833 specifications that shape the build

Specification What it means for this project
Native array 8 × 8, or 64 temperature-reading pixels (Panasonic product page; year not stated).
Viewing angle 60° (Panasonic product page; year not stated). This describes the sensor’s view, not the display’s field of view after cropping or enclosure design.
Sensor supply 3.3 V operating voltage (Panasonic product page; year not stated). The bare sensor’s requirement differs from the breakout’s host-input range.
Temperature range and accuracy 0°C to 80°C and ±2.5°C, as stated in Adafruit’s guide, published June 28, 2017, with a major update on March 10, 2021. Treat these as the guide’s stated sensor figures, not calibration guarantees for an assembled device.
Maximum frame rate 10 Hz, as stated in Adafruit’s guide (published 2017; major update 2021). This is a modest refresh rate for a live viewer.
Breakout size and weight 25.6 × 25.3 × 6.0 mm and 3.2 g for Adafruit’s breakout board; these are not the dimensions or weight of the finished camera. See Adafruit product 3538.

The cited temperature range and accuracy are not a substitute for a calibrated instrument. Sensor readings can differ from an object’s true surface temperature because of factors such as emissivity, distance, viewing angle, and reflected heat. Use the display primarily to compare relative hot and cool areas unless you have validated the measurement setup for your application.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Parts to plan for

  • AMG8833 breakout: A breakout is the practical choice for most makers. Panasonic lists the sensor as a surface-mount component; Adafruit’s breakout exposes I2C and includes a regulator and level shifting, accepting 3–5 V input from compatible host boards.
  • Controller: Choose a board that can communicate over I2C and run the selected example software. Adafruit’s guide demonstrates an Arduino route and also links Python/CircuitPython and Raspberry Pi approaches.
  • Display: A small color TFT is needed for a self-contained handheld viewer. Adafruit’s thermal-camera example uses a 1.44-inch color TFT; the guide’s example is one implementation, not a requirement of the sensor.
  • Wiring: Use four connections—power, ground, I2C clock (SCL), and I2C data (SDA). For a solder-free connection, the breakout’s STEMMA QT connector works with a compatible STEMMA QT or Qwiic cable. The cable is sold separately.
  • Battery and enclosure: Select these to suit your controller and display. The completed device will be larger than the sensor breakout, and its runtime and final dimensions depend on the chosen parts; the cited sources do not establish either figure.

Adafruit lists a pinout change associated with its 2021 STEMMA QT update, so check the revision and the labels on your specific board before wiring. Board dimensions and connector details are available on the product page.

Wire the sensor to the controller

Connect the breakout’s power and I2C lines to the controller. Use the board labels and the controller’s pinout rather than assuming every board places I2C on the same physical pins.

Breakout signal Connect to
VIN A supported supply pin on the host. Adafruit’s breakout accepts 3–5 V input; do not apply that range directly to the bare sensor.
GND Controller ground.
SCL Controller I2C clock pin.
SDA Controller I2C data pin.

With STEMMA QT, use a compatible cable between the breakout and host connector, if the host has one. Otherwise, use the labeled header pins; solder header strips to the breakout if your chosen wiring method requires them. Adafruit’s guide provides the wiring diagrams and example connections for its supported setups.

Load the example and display thermal readings

  1. Choose a supported route: Follow the Arduino, Python/CircuitPython, or Raspberry Pi path in Adafruit’s guide. Confirm the controller and display match the selected example.
  2. Install the software: For the Arduino example, install the Adafruit AMG88xx library using the method described in the guide.
  3. Run the pixel-reading example: Start with the example that reads the sensor’s pixel temperatures. This verifies that I2C communication is working before you add the display.
  4. Add the TFT camera example: For a standalone viewer, use the guide’s example with its 1.44-inch color TFT and follow the example’s display and controller wiring.
  5. Check the result: The image should respond to broad temperature changes across the sensor’s view. Expect an 8 × 8 measured grid even if the display rendering looks smoother.

Size, resolution, and practical limits

The breakout itself is 25.6 × 25.3 × 6.0 mm and weighs 3.2 g, according to Adafruit’s product listing. The assembled viewer also needs a controller, display, power source, wiring, and usually an enclosure, so “pocket-sized” describes a design goal rather than the breakout’s finished-device dimensions.

At 10 Hz maximum, the sensor can refresh a thermal display, but it is not intended to deliver the detail or responsiveness of a conventional camera. Its 60° view covers a fairly broad scene, while each of the 64 sensor cells averages information over part of that scene. A target occupying only a small fraction of a cell may not produce a distinct shape on screen.

For temperature work, keep the stated 0°C to 80°C range and ±2.5°C accuracy in view, and do not infer precision beyond those specifications. This project is best suited to demonstrating heat distribution, spotting larger temperature contrasts, and detecting a person or warm object—not verifying safety-critical temperatures or identifying fine details.
