Inertia.js v3.8.0 adds two useful capabilities: WhenMounted lets you defer browser-dependent UI until it runs in the browser, and opt-in BigInt preservation keeps large integer props exact instead of silently rounding them. BigInt preservation requires inertia-laravel v3.5.0; WhenMounted is documented for React, Vue, and Svelte.
What WhenMounted changes for server-rendered pages
Server-side rendering (SSR) runs components in a server environment, where browser globals such as window and document are unavailable. A component that reads one of them while rendering can therefore fail before it reaches the browser.
WhenMounted renders fallback content on the server and during the browser’s first hydration render. After it mounts in the browser, it renders its children. This lets the initial server-rendered page and hydration output agree while delaying browser-only work until the relevant APIs exist. The feature is documented for React, Vue, and Svelte.
React: defer the browser-dependent expression
Pass a function as the child so the browser-dependent JSX is not evaluated before WhenMounted can defer it:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
<WhenMounted fallback={<p>Loading chart…</p>}>
{() => <SalesChart width={window.innerWidth} />}
</WhenMounted>
The function matters: writing <SalesChart width={window.innerWidth} /> directly as JSX evaluates window.innerWidth while constructing the child, too early for the guard to help.
Vue: provide a fallback slot
In Vue, use the fallback slot for the server and initial hydration state, with browser-dependent content in the default slot:

<WhenMounted>
<template #fallback>
<p>Loading chart…</p>
</template>
<SalesChart :width="window.innerWidth" />
</WhenMounted>
Choose fallback content that is safe to render on the server and provides an appropriate interim presentation. The Laravel News examples describe the component behavior and adapter syntax; consult that article for the corresponding Svelte usage.
Initial SSR render versus a later client-side visit
The fallback is relevant when the component participates in SSR and hydration. If a WhenMounted component is mounted later during a client-side visit, its children render immediately, according to the Laravel News explanation.

How BigInt props avoid large-integer rounding
JavaScript’s ordinary Number type cannot represent every integer exactly beyond its safe integer range. A large identifier sent from PHP as a JSON number can consequently be rounded during parsing without an error, leaving the client with a different value than the server sent.
With BigInt preservation enabled, Inertia transports large values using a marker such as {"$bigint":"9223372036854775807"} and converts them to native JavaScript BigInt values on the client. Integers within JavaScript’s safe range remain ordinary numbers. The behavior applies to initial page data, visits, partial reloads, encrypted history, and SSR, as described by Laravel News.

Enable BigInt preservation in Laravel
BigInt preservation is opt-in and requires inertia-laravel v3.5.0. Choose the scope that matches how broadly you want the serialization behavior to apply:
| Approach | Where to configure it | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Application-wide configuration | Set preserve_big_integers in config/inertia.php. |
Use when you want consistent BigInt preservation across the application. |
| Application-wide environment setting | Set INERTIA_PRESERVE_BIG_INTEGERS. |
Use when you want to control the global setting through the environment. |
| Selected response | Call preserveBigIntegers() on an individual response. |
Use when rolling out the behavior only for chosen responses. |
The Laravel News article documents these three routes. Its examples indicate the choice is between consistent application-wide serialization and enabling preservation on selected responses; check the installed adapter’s documentation for the exact configuration context in your application.

Submitting BigInt values back to Laravel
When a BigInt is submitted through a form, router, or Precognition path, the article says Inertia sends it as a digit string. It reports that Laravel’s integer validation rule and $request->integer() accept that string. This is the reported integration behavior; verify it against the versions and request flow used by your application, especially if you have custom request handling.
Quick Recap
Other fixes included in Inertia.js v3.8.0
- Form callback forwarding: the release fixes forwarding of Form visit callbacks that were previously missing. Laravel News names
onHttpException,onNetworkError,onBeforeUpdate, andonFlash; it also says returningfalsefrom an error callback stops default handling. - Optimistic updates: a stale response no longer reverts a newer optimistic update. The article explains that if an older request arrives after a newer request succeeds, the older result does not roll the page back; if the newer request fails, an older successful response may still apply.
- History restoration after a deploy: when restoring browser history on a back/forward reload, Inertia now checks asset versions. This addresses the case where old page props might otherwise be restored alongside a new JavaScript bundle.
- SSR output: the release notes also list a UTF-8 parsing fix and removal of top-level await from the generated SSR bundle.
