Powered exoskeletons are being evaluated and used in industrial settings, while military and rescue applications range from demonstrations to prototypes and funded development. But evidence that they prevent workplace injuries is still limited: laboratory studies generally find reduced muscle strain, whereas real-world injury reduction has not been established. It also matters whether a device is powered or passive—some products described as exoskeletons do not use motors or other actuators at all.
What makes an exoskeleton powered?
A powered, or active, exoskeleton uses actuators such as electric motors, pneumatics or hydraulics to assist movement. A passive system instead uses forces generated by the wearer—often through springs or counterbalances—to support a body part or task. A soft exosuit may be passive or powered; the word “suit” alone does not identify its mechanism. These differences affect what a device can support, as well as its power needs, weight and operating constraints. NIOSH’s overview of industrial exoskeletons describes these distinctions.
NIOSH groups industrial devices by the body area or task they assist:
- Back assistance
- Shoulder or arm assistance
- Tool holding or support
- Leg assistance
That classification is more useful than treating all devices as interchangeable. A back-support garment for repeated bending is not the same kind of equipment as a powered frame intended to assist lifting or a device that supports a tool.

Can exoskeletons reduce injuries in warehouses?
They may reduce physical strain in some tasks, but current evidence does not show that workplace exoskeleton deployments reliably prevent injuries. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that laboratory studies generally show reduced muscle strain under controlled conditions. It also found limited public evidence that wearable technologies reduce injuries on the job; field studies were often short. GAO’s report, Wearable Technologies: Potential Opportunities and Deployment Challenges in Manufacturing and Warehousing, was published on Dec. 12, 2024, and publicly released Jan. 13, 2025.
Muscle strain, discomfort and fatigue are not the same outcome as fewer diagnosed injuries. GAO reported that certain wearables may help workers experiencing musculoskeletal pain or discomfort, but said there have not been enough studies to know for sure whether the technologies reduce injuries. Its review also reported at least $17.7 billion in employer costs from musculoskeletal injuries in 2021; that figure describes injury costs, not savings attributable to exoskeletons. Manufacturing and warehousing workers experienced these injuries at higher rates than workers across all private industry, according to GAO’s report on ergonomic hazards at warehouses and delivery companies.

Why a device may not be the best first control
An exoskeleton does not remove a hazardous task. GAO describes hazard elimination or substitution as options employers may prefer; for example, a lift table can remove the need for a worker to lift an item manually, rather than adding back support while the lift continues.
Where a wearable is being considered, the practical questions go beyond how much assistance it claims to provide. GAO identifies comfort and convenience as important to worker use and notes concerns about privacy and security when devices collect data. Employers should also consider whether task redesign or another control would remove exposure more effectively.

What do current industrial products show?
Two manufacturer-described products illustrate why the label “exoskeleton” is not enough to compare equipment. One is powered; the other is not. Their specifications and performance claims come from their makers, and the cited sources do not establish a fair head-to-head performance comparison.
| Product | Mechanism and stated use | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| German Bionic Exia | Powered; German Bionic describes assistance for lifting, walking, carrying and bent-over work. | In its May 27, 2025 announcement, the maker claimed up to 38 kg of dynamic lift assistance. This is a manufacturer specification, not independent evidence of injury prevention. German Bionic’s announcement. |
| HeroWear Apex 2 | Non-powered back-assist exosuit for bending and lifting in logistics, manufacturing and warehousing. | HeroWear describes it as weighing 3 pounds and reports reduced strain and fatigue. Those outcome statements are company claims, not an independent comparative trial. HeroWear’s product page. |
The specifications above describe different mechanisms and are not a ranking. For an employer, a meaningful evaluation would look at the task and body area supported, fit and comfort, any power or runtime requirements, evidence for the particular outcome sought, data collection and privacy practices, and the requirements for implementation. The available product sources do not establish that one of these devices performs better than the other.

How far have rescue and battlefield systems progressed?
IBEX is a self-evacuation prototype
The Army Medical Research and Development Command described the Intrepid Battlefield EXoskeleton (IBEX) as a collapsible, 7-pound prototype intended to stabilize lower-leg injuries and bear a wounded service member’s body weight, allowing the person to stand and walk if evacuation is delayed or unavailable. The project began in 2020 and had reached a fifth-generation prototype, according to the command’s 2026 account. That documents prototype development and intended function; it does not establish routine field issue or validated battlefield effectiveness.
MESH is funded development, not an operational system
A 2025 Army SBIR award record describes MESH as a Phase I project to explore an exosuit combining lifting support and safety functions for manufacturing, maintenance, repair and emergency-response scenarios. The award record describes development work, not an adopted emergency-response capability.

The Air Force has demonstrated an exoskeleton for aerial porters
A 2022 Air Force report documents a demonstration for aerial porters and identifies loading aeromedical evacuation litters as a possible additional use. Brig. Gen. John Andrus, then commander of the Air Force’s 711th Human Performance Wing, said: “I can see additional uses for this pneumatically-powered exoskeleton, primarily in aeromedical evacuation missions where our medical personnel are lifting large litters of sick and injured warfighters into the back of aircraft.” The report records a demonstration and a potential application, not routine operational adoption. Air Force report.
Older Navy reporting is historical context
A 2020 Navy report described small-scale trials and quoted a researcher saying the field lacked a large body of effectiveness research, while energy storage and miniaturization still needed breakthroughs for broader warfighter viability. That is a dated assessment, not a current inventory or status report. Navy report.
