It is coming first to Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, reducing one reason to feel you need a PS5 Pro. It does not establish that the two consoles now produce equivalent images or performance: Sony says PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro.
What Sony announced about QSSR
Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling, evolved from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. According to Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for the standard PS5. Sony says it brings AI-guided upscaling to that console, improving image detail and stability. Those are Sony’s descriptions, not results from an independent image-quality test. Sony’s QSSR announcement names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games being patched to add QSSR as an additional graphics option.
The announcement does not give a complete future game list or rollout calendar, and it does not say that every PS5 game will receive QSSR. Check the individual game’s current patch notes and graphics options rather than assuming support.
What QSSR changes—and what it doesn’t
AI upscaling is no longer exclusive to PS5 Pro
For owners of the standard PS5, the practical change is that supported games can use an AI-guided reconstruction option. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology, Mike Fitzgerald, says QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions says the feature brings more clarity and detail to Ghost of Yōtei. These are developer statements about their games, not controlled comparisons between QSSR and PSSR.

Sony still positions PSSR as the higher-end option
Sony’s announcement explicitly says PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro. That framing does not support claims that QSSR matches PSSR, that the standard PS5 has become equivalent to the Pro, or that the Pro is obsolete. Sony’s official pages do not provide a QSSR-versus-PSSR image-quality statistic or a controlled side-by-side result.

Sony’s 2024 PS5 Pro launch announcement said the console has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Should QSSR change your upgrade decision?
It can reduce PS5 Pro FOMO if the games you care about support QSSR and your main concern is AI-assisted image reconstruction. For a purchase or upgrade decision, weigh the games you actually play, their available graphics modes, and whether you value image detail, frame rate, or ray tracing most. Sony describes Pro benefits as applying to select compatible games; a feature’s presence does not mean every game offers the same combination of improvements.
- Keep the standard PS5 in consideration if you are happy with its performance and the QSSR-supported games you play offer the image option you want.
- Consider the Pro on its broader merits if specific games you play use its performance or ray-tracing features in ways you value, in addition to PSSR.
- Check the exact game and patch before treating QSSR or a Pro enhancement as available. Support and graphics options are title-specific and can change.
Sony’s cited materials do not provide a current price comparison or independent QSSR/PSSR head-to-head test, so they cannot settle whether the upgrade is worth its cost for every player.

Don’t confuse QSSR with PS4 image enhancement
Sony’s separate “Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games” setting is not QSSR. It applies to PS4 games played on PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, and Sony says it requires a screen capable of 2160p or 1440p at 60Hz. The setting is under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony support: Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games
