Its top-down, twin-stick combat is paired with branching routes, locked doors, tools and backtracking: getting stronger is not only about surviving what is ahead, but also reaching places you could not access before.
What is End of Abyss about?
Cel is sent into a sprawling underground complex to investigate disturbances. The setting is built around abandoned spaces, machinery and monstrous creatures, making exploration part of the danger rather than a simple way to travel between fights.
Section 9 Interactive describes the game’s atmosphere as drawing on the films, games, comic books and anime its developers grew up with. The result is intended to feel worn and uneasy, with a decaying sci-fi world rather than a clean, futuristic facility. Marcus Ottvall’s Xbox Wire launch article gives that design context.
Is End of Abyss a twin-stick shooter or a Metroidvania?
It is both, with horror shaping the setting and combat. You move Cel with one stick and aim with the other, while exploration follows a Metroidvania-like pattern: routes branch, doors and paths can be inaccessible at first, and new tools let you return to areas you have already visited.

Combat and resource use
A June 2026 Xbox Wire hands-on with a demo described dodging, limited-use healing, an unlimited-use energy pistol and a shotgun with limited ammunition. The demo also included flares, grenades, crafting materials, equipment crafting and permanent upgrades. Tools, routes and backtracking
Official store descriptions highlight a Scanner and other tools for finding hidden areas and navigating branching paths. Keys and locked doors, shortcuts and map information all support a loop of exploring, gathering what you need, then returning to earlier corridors with new capabilities. The Scanner is meant to make that exploration easier to manage: Section 9 co-founder Mattias Otvall described it as “a tool that we created for making the exploration more manageable and enjoyable.”

That structure suits players who like learning a map and revisiting it with new tools. The trade-off is that progress may involve searching for a route or an obstacle you can now overcome, rather than moving straight from one fight to the next.
How does progression work?
Progression combines practical upgrades with access to more of the complex. Gear and equipment help Cel survive, while unlocked tools can reveal hidden areas or open routes that were previously out of reach. The game’s design is therefore built around two connected questions: what will help you handle the next encounter, and where can you go now that you could not go before?

Marcus Ottvall said the team wanted combat that was “relatively simple” to pick up, paired with a Metroidvania element for finding weapons and equipment, powering up the character and exploring interconnected areas. That aim helps explain the balance: the shooting provides the immediate action, while route-finding and upgrades give exploration its longer arc.
What did early reviews say about the experience?
GamesRadar’s October 1, 2026 review praised the atmosphere and monster design, but its reviewer also reported frustrating boss fights, hard-to-see objects in gloomy areas and bugs. Those are the findings of one early review, not a guarantee that every player will encounter the same problems; patches and individual experiences can differ.

- Bosses: Reviewer Luke Kemp found some fights unfairly difficult.
- Visibility: The gloom sometimes made levers and other objects difficult to spot.
- Bugs: The review described enemies hitting through walls, an elevator loading issue and a soft lock near the end.
Kemp reported spending 18 hours exploring and getting lost, and said a direct route to the final boss could be completed in half that time or less. That is one reviewer’s experience, not an official or typical completion-time estimate.

What accessibility options are listed?
The PlayStation listing describes subtitles for the main story and main characters, rather than a broader subtitle scope. It also lists adjustable stick sensitivity, play without motion controls, touch controls, vibration or adaptive trigger effects, and the ability to pause during gameplay or cinematics in offline play. Check the listing for the platform you plan to use, since these details are specifically stated on the PlayStation page.
Who made End of Abyss?
End of Abyss was developed by Section 9 Interactive and published by Epic Games Publishing. Section 9 is a small Malmö, Sweden-based studio founded by three former Tarsier Studios members. Its co-founders Mattias and Marcus Ottvall and Gustaf Heinerwall previously worked together at Tarsier, according to Xbox Wire.
Marcus Ottvall has said the concept evolved from a faster, action-based top-down shooter toward a slower, more atmospheric experience. That evolution is reflected in the finished game’s combination of direct shooting and deliberate exploration through an uneasy, interconnected environment.
