Some lean toward a party, others focus on particular candidates, consider third-party options, weigh split tickets or plan to skip a specific race.
What the poll says—and what the interviews show
NBC News reported that 5% of respondents in a poll were unsure which party they wanted to control Congress. The poll figures reported in the story were 50% preferring Democratic control and 45% preferring Republican control. Those are poll results, not findings from the 16 interviews. NBC News’ account, republished by CONVEN.ORG, describes the interviews as a look at individual voters, not a representative estimate of all undecided voters.
The 16 people spoke about choices across House, Senate and governor races. A person could be uncertain about one contest while leaning toward a party in another, so “undecided” does not mean that every interviewee had no preferences or intended to vote the same way down the ballot.
Household costs are a common concern
Interviewees described pressure from groceries, fuel, commuting, medication and housing. Their comments show how they experience costs, but they are personal accounts rather than independently verified economic measurements.

- James Morton, a 67-year-old retired truck driver in Colorado, said: “The No. 1 thing is getting the cost of things back down, inflation under control, and pretty much that’s it.”
- Aidan Valenzuela, a 19-year-old security worker in Texas, said: “I don’t like how expensive things are, and I don’t think anyone does.”
- Joanne, a 72-year-old Vermont independent, said: “I just want somebody to bring some of these prices back down.”
- Luke Melanson, a retired construction worker in Louisiana, described cutting back on food: “I’m not eating as much. I’m eating less food because I can only afford so much.”
- Darien Thompson, a South Carolina security guard, summed up housing concerns: “But it’s, like, none of us can afford houses.”
Ibraham, an Ohio truck driver, said his weekly diesel costs had gone from $2,000 to $3,500 or $3,700. That is his account of his own expenses, not a general measure of diesel prices.
Frustration with parties does not produce one alternative
Several interviewees expressed frustration with both major parties or described limited party loyalty. Their responses varied: some leaned toward one party, some judged candidates individually, and some considered a third-party choice, a split ticket or not voting in a particular race. These are useful ways to understand the interviews, not categories measured by the poll.

One California independent, Aaron L., said he would likely support a Democrat in one race because of institutional concerns: “I will probably support [a] Democrat this time around just so there’s some check and balances in place.” The bracketed wording is as printed in the interview report.
Views on Trump and the Iran war shape some stated choices
Some respondents connected their preferences to their views of President Trump, the value of checks and balances or the Iran war. These are interviewees’ explanations of their own choices; the reporting does not establish that a particular policy caused a broader shift in voter behavior.

The interviews illustrate the range of decisions hidden inside a broad label like “undecided”: a voter may be weighing candidates in one contest, leaning toward a party elsewhere, or dissatisfied with both major parties while still choosing among several ways to vote. They cannot establish how common any one view is among undecided voters nationally.
