SteamOS is no longer limited to the Steam Deck: Valve now lists Lenovo’s Legion Go S among devices officially powered by SteamOS, alongside Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Steam Frame. That makes the operating system a more credible challenger in handheld gaming—but it does not show that Windows is losing the wider PC market. SteamOS’s strongest case is a gaming-focused handheld experience paired with Proton, which runs many Windows games. Compatibility gaps, particularly with some anti-cheat systems, remain a meaningful constraint.
What has changed: SteamOS is moving beyond Steam Deck
Valve’s official SteamOS installation and repair page lists Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Lenovo Legion Go S as devices officially “Powered by SteamOS.” Valve also says SteamOS can be installed on additional AMD-powered PCs, while noting that its ability to troubleshoot hardware outside the supported list may be limited. This is a bounded support list, not a promise that SteamOS works equally well on every PC.
The Legion Go S is a concrete sign that SteamOS has expanded beyond Valve hardware. Valve’s May 2025 update archive records the addition of official support for Lenovo’s device. One partner device demonstrates a route for other hardware makers; it does not establish broad OEM adoption or sales momentum. Availability and pricing vary by region, so check local listings before buying.
Why SteamOS could appeal to handheld gamers
Valve presents SteamOS as a gaming-oriented system for its own handheld and other supported hardware. On a handheld, that positioning may appeal to people who want their device to feel organized around launching and playing games rather than managing a general-purpose desktop first. That is a product-positioning argument, not evidence from controlled usability tests showing SteamOS is universally easier or better.

SteamOS also brings the Steam ecosystem to supported hardware. The trade-off is that the experience depends on whether a particular game, launcher, peripheral and hardware configuration work well together. A focused interface cannot remove those compatibility questions.
How Proton runs Windows games—and where it falls short
SteamOS is Linux-based, but many games built for Windows can still run through Proton. Valve describes Proton as a compatibility layer that runs Windows executables and game data on Steam Deck and Steam Machine. It is not the same as having a native Linux version, and a game appearing in the Steam catalog does not guarantee it will work well on every SteamOS device.

Valve explicitly cautions that “Proton is a work in progress.” Blocking compatibility bugs or performance problems can lead to an Unsupported rating. Compatibility can also vary with updates to the game, Proton and device software.
Anti-cheat is a particularly important exception. In its 2023 Microsoft/Activision decision, the European Commission described technical limits in compatibility layers and noted that some games are unplayable primarily because of anti-cheat implementations. That is a regulatory assessment, not a claim that every anti-cheat system fails or that Proton alone causes every compatibility problem.

Before choosing a SteamOS handheld as your only gaming PC, check the games you actually play—especially multiplayer titles that depend on anti-cheat—and verify their current compatibility on the specific device. If a must-play game does not work, the operating system’s broader catalog matters less.
What the Steam figures say—and what they do not
In Valve’s July 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey, Windows accounted for 93.67% of operating-system readings among respondents, Linux for 4.01%, and SteamOS Holo for 0.89%. Valve says participation is optional and anonymous. SteamOS Holo is a category within Linux, not a separate share to add to Linux. These are readings from participating Steam customers, not a census of all PC users, installed computers or game revenue.

The same survey context makes two points at once: Windows remains dominant among surveyed Steam users, while Linux-based gaming has a visible, if much smaller, presence. The figures do not establish how many SteamOS devices have been sold or whether the platform is gaining share over time.

The European Commission’s 2023 Microsoft/Activision decision cited Steam data showing that 97.75% of games played on Steam were played on Windows OS in March 2023. That is a historical snapshot of games played on Steam—not a current figure, a measure of all PC gaming, or a Windows market-share estimate. It nevertheless illustrates how entrenched Windows was in that specific Steam dataset.

SteamOS’s compatibility layer reduces the need for games to be written specifically for Linux, but it does not erase the advantage of a gaming ecosystem built around Windows. In particular, a player whose library includes games blocked by anti-cheat or other technical limitations may have a practical reason to prefer Windows, even if SteamOS suits the device’s handheld format better.
Can SteamOS replace Windows for PC gaming?
For some players, SteamOS can be a workable choice, especially on officially supported handheld hardware and for libraries made up of compatible games. The available evidence does not establish that it can replace Windows for PC gaming as a whole. Valve’s supported hardware list is limited, Proton compatibility is still evolving, and Windows remains dominant in Valve’s July 2026 survey of participating Steam customers.
The more defensible conclusion is narrower: SteamOS gives Microsoft a reason to pay attention to the handheld segment. Official support beyond Steam Deck and Proton’s ability to run many Windows games make it a genuine alternative in that category. They do not demonstrate a threat to Microsoft’s overall business or a broad displacement of Windows.
