The split is not simply “good combat versus bad combat”: reviewers also differ in how well they think the story and campaign structure sustain that combat. The Xbox description frames the game as a prequel set fourteen years before the original, following young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the Locust invasion’s opening days. That setup offers familiar characters at an earlier point in their lives, but the reviews do not agree on whether the surrounding story and pacing make the most of it. Xbox’s official game page.
Is this a review of multiplayer?
No. The cited reviews available for this roundup focus on the single-player campaign. Windows Central said multiplayer modes were unavailable to test during its review period, while GamesRadar explicitly marked its coverage as review-in-progress pending multiplayer elements. The current praise and criticism should therefore be read as campaign impressions, not a final multiplayer verdict.

If multiplayer is the main reason you are considering the game, these campaign reviews cannot yet tell you how the modes perform, how they are balanced, or how well they hold up over time.
When does Gears of War: E-Day release?
Xbox lists October 6, 2026 as the general release date. Premium Edition owners have up to five days of early access beginning October 1, and the official Gears page lists October 1 as the Collector’s Edition launch date.
