Blizzard Walks Back Most StarCraft II 5.0.16 Balance Changes in 5.0.17 PTR

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blizzard’s StarCraft II 5.0.17 Public Test Realm notes reverse most of the balance changes from live patch 5.0.16, including a return to 12 starting workers. The notes describe a PTR build for bug testing ahead of a planned live release; they do not establish that the update has since gone live. Blizzard says it wants more time for the game’s meta to develop and plans to revisit changes in a later patch.

What 5.0.17 changes about the redesign

Blizzard calls 5.0.17 a reversal of “most balance changes,” not a complete removal of every change or piece of content. In the official 5.0.17 PTR notes, the adjustments span the economy and units across all three races. The announcement shared on the StarCraft II forum also says the updated map pool and bug fixes remain.

The prior balance target is patch 5.0.15. Its official notes document specific Zerg, Protoss and Terran changes as well as bug fixes. Since Blizzard describes 5.0.17 as reverting most balance changes, that wording should not be taken to mean that every intervening change from 5.0.16 has been individually undone.

Economy and opening pace

The clearest change for the opening of a match is the starting worker count. The PTR notes restore the start to 12 workers, up from 8 in the changes being rolled back. They also adjust mineral and gas settings:

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Setting Previous value 5.0.17 PTR value
Starting workers 8 12
Large mineral patch 1,600 1,800
Small mineral patch 1,100 900
Default Vespene geyser 2,000 2,250
Default gas per base 4,500 5,000

These are game-setting values listed in Blizzard’s 2026 5.0.17 PTR notes, not player-population statistics. The changes affect both the opening worker count and the resource amounts associated with mineral patches, geysers and a base’s default gas.

Race and unit balance

The rollback is not limited to the economy: the 5.0.17 notes list changes affecting Zerg, Protoss and Terran. For the specific unit adjustments, consult Blizzard’s 5.0.17 PTR notes alongside the 5.0.15 notes, which provide the earlier balance details. The phrase “most balance changes” is not enough to conclude that every change from 5.0.16 was reverted.

Why Blizzard is reversing course

Blizzard’s developer note says: “Our intention was to try something new, particularly with workers, and needed time to let the meta develop in order to ensure the most accurate feedback was being considered.” The stated rationale is to give the meta time to develop so feedback can be evaluated after the changes have been tried.

Blizzard representative Blizz_Elliott later said: “We can’t share timing yet for when the next PTR will go live but it is already being worked on.” The representative added that reverting was the best option for addressing critical feedback on the patch while focusing new changes in the patch after 5.0.17. That explains the direction of future work, but gives no release date.

PTR status and what happens next

Blizzard’s notes put 5.0.17 on the Public Test Realm for bug testing, with a planned push to live after a few days. That was the plan stated in the announcement, not confirmation of a later deployment. Check Blizzard’s current patch announcements for the live version rather than assuming the PTR build is now available to everyone.

Blizzard said work on the next PTR was already underway, but had not shared when it would go live. The stated plan is to focus new changes in a patch after 5.0.17; no timing or final contents were specified.
