Why were Fallout 76 servers down on October 1?
Bethesda scheduled maintenance across all platforms for Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 10 AM ET (9 AM CT) to release an update. The studio said it had moved the update from its originally planned September 29 date so it could include additional stability fixes. What did the October 1 update fix?
Bethesda’s update notes list stability work across all platforms, including these specific changes: October 1 update notes
- Crashes on PlayStation and Xbox: Fixes for various scenarios Bethesda described as leading causes of crashes.
- Weapon appearances: A correction for an issue that incorrectly applied the unique appearances of the Head Hunter Scythe, Cauterizer, and Drill Fist.
- Xbox networking: A fix for an issue associated with more lag, disconnects, and slow looting.
- Other stability work: Bethesda said the update included additional stability improvements.
When did servers come back online?
The October 1 update post showed a Bethesda staff status update at 10:04 AM ET saying the servers were undergoing maintenance. The reviewed official notices do not confirm when all servers returned, so there is no verified all-platform restoration time to report. They also do not specify an update version number or download size, or establish that every affected player’s issue was resolved.

For the current service status, check the official Fallout 76 status portal linked from Bethesda’s Fallout 76 page. A maintenance notice or server-status report is a better first check than changing your home network settings.
What to do if you still cannot connect
If Bethesda’s status information does not show an active outage and you are playing on PC, Bethesda Support suggests checking your local connection. These steps cannot resolve scheduled maintenance, game-side crashes, or a Bethesda-side networking issue. Bethesda Support’s PC connection guidance

- Try a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi.
- Restart your router.
- Check whether your firewall or antivirus software is blocking the game.
- Check that the router ports listed in Bethesda’s support guidance are available.
Bethesda cautions that players cannot play while an outage is reported and unresolved. Check the official status portal again before continuing local troubleshooting.
