Good-faith disagreement starts by treating another person as potentially sincere and judging what they say on its merits—not treating disagreement or a possible personal benefit as proof of deceit. That presumption is not a claim that nobody lies; it is a way to keep discussion open to evidence rather than closing it with an assumption about motive.
What does it mean to argue in good faith?
In public and political discussion, arguing in good faith means engaging with another person’s stated position as though they may genuinely hold it. You can challenge the claim, ask for evidence, and point out inconsistencies without deciding in advance that the speaker is corrupt or dishonest.
The Free Speech News Network article “The Case for Good Faith,” identified in search results under a News Room byline, makes this distinction in the context of political and intellectual disagreement. Its argument is that productive exchange becomes harder when people treat disagreement itself as proof of bad motives. The publisher page could not be accessed, so the article’s individual author and exact publication date are not confirmed.
Does benefiting from a position mean someone does not believe it?
No. A person’s financial or political interests may be relevant when assessing an argument, but benefit alone does not establish that the person is insincere. Someone can hold a view and also gain from expressing it. The question of what a claim is worth still depends on its reasons and evidence, not solely on who stands to benefit.

Good faith is not blind trust. If there is specific evidence of deception, it can matter. The point is to distinguish that evidence from an inference based only on disagreement or a possible incentive.
How can you practice good-faith disagreement?
- Address the claim first. Ask what the person is asserting and what reasons they give for it.
- Separate incentives from proof. Consider a speaker’s interests where relevant, but do not treat them as conclusive evidence of insincerity.
- Ask before assigning motive. Clarify what the person means or what evidence would change their view.
- Stay open to contrary evidence. A presumption of sincerity is a starting point, not a requirement to ignore signs of deception.
These habits do not guarantee agreement. They make it possible to test an argument without turning every disagreement into a verdict on the other person’s character.

“Good faith” also has a legal meaning
The phrase is used differently in different fields. In English contract law, it concerns standards for contractual performance and how existing rules relate to honesty, fair dealing, and the purpose of an agreement. That is a domain-specific legal discussion, not a test for whether someone in political debate is sincere.
In their 2020 chapter on English contract law, Mindy Chen-Wishart and Victoria Dixon write, “Good faith is an elusive concept.” They propose a restrained framework for organizing existing rules rather than creating a general, independent cause of action. As they put it: “Humble good faith does not create new causes of action, add to the parties’ existing rights or obligations, or change the agreed substantive terms of the contract.” Its application depends on the contract and legal culture; those legal questions should not be transferred directly to everyday disagreement.
