The grant’s intended work is documented; its effects on patient outcomes are not yet established.
What French Gates says medicine has missed
In an interview on the Nice Talk podcast, French Gates connected menopause-care gaps to a history of medical research and institutions centered on men’s bodies. As Marie Claire reported her remarks, she said: “So we studied men’s bodies, but we didn’t necessarily study women’s bodies in the way that we should have,” and added, “And so, consequently, our health system got set up for men.”
Her point is not that menopause is the only area where women’s health has been overlooked. The interview frames it as one example of a broader need to reconsider research priorities and improve reproductive-health care, while also connecting women’s health to workforce participation, public-sector investment, and philanthropy.
Why menopause care requires more than awareness
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause; menopause is a life stage, not a disease. Symptoms and care needs vary, and the podcast interview is not a clinical guide to identifying symptoms or choosing treatment. French Gates’s argument is that women need to be able to describe what they are experiencing and have clinicians who can recognize when further evaluation or care is appropriate.

Marie Claire attributes to French Gates the claim that about one-third of OB/GYNs are trained in perimenopause and menopause. The article does not identify the underlying survey, its date, denominator, or definition of training, so the figure should be understood as her interview claim rather than an independently verified measure of clinician training.
French Gates described the historic silence around the subject this way: “Every woman goes through it, but it’s sort of unspeakable, untreatable is the way we’ve looked at it in the past.” She also noted that treatments exist, while arguing for more options and better access to appropriate care. Neither her interview nor the grant announcement endorses a particular medicine, supplement, device, or symptom tracker.

What Pivotal’s grant is intended to do
On June 4, 2026, The Menopause Society announced that Pivotal provided $10 million for healthcare-professional education and outreach in areas where access to menopause care is most limited. The Society’s NextGen Now Initiative is described as addressing training through clinical education, digital innovation, and research translation. These are the announced aims, not evidence that the grant has already changed diagnosis rates, treatment access, or patient outcomes.
The initiative addresses two distinct barriers: clinicians may need more preparation to identify menopause-related care needs, and people in underserved areas may have fewer routes to informed care. The Society’s release does not describe a treatment protocol. It also states that most women spend more than one-third of their lives in menopause; that estimate is the Society’s framing in its announcement.

French Gates said in the release: “For too long, perimenopause and menopause have been treated as invisible – something women are expected to manage quietly, without clear answers or support. That must change. By getting healthcare practitioners better training and investing in research, we can help ensure women have the care they need to live full and healthy lives,” The Menopause Society’s medical director, Dr. Stephanie Faubion, summarized the access problem: “Menopause is a universal life stage, but quality care is not universally available,”

French Gates’s call is for a system response, not a substitute for individualized medical advice. If you are looking for help with symptoms, a practical starting point is to ask a clinician how they assess perimenopause and menopause, what care options may fit your circumstances, and whether they can refer you to someone with relevant expertise. The interview reports the need for better training and access; it does not provide a directory of clinicians or prescribe a treatment.

The larger test for initiatives like the grant will be whether education, outreach, and research translation make knowledgeable care easier to reach. The announcement specifies where support is meant to go and what the initiative is designed to address, but does not yet establish measurable results.
