Start with the income or expenses your family would need covered, for how long, then account for debts, savings, other income, future goals and existing cover. Treat the number as a planning estimate—not a policy quote or a decision about eligibility or claims.
What a term insurance calculator estimates
Term insurance is a life policy that pays a stated death benefit if the insured dies during the policy term. IRDAI describes it as “a fixed amount of money on death during the period of contract.” A calculator estimates a possible amount of cover; it does not change the benefit promised by a policy or decide whether an insurer will issue that policy. IRDAI: What is Life Insurance?
There is no single universal formula across the calculators reviewed. Some estimate the economic value of the insured’s income over time; others begin with household expenses, debts and goals, then account for available resources. The fields and assumptions differ by provider, so the result is meaningful only alongside the method used.
How much term insurance cover do I need?
Estimate the financial gap your family would face if your contribution stopped: the support they would need, for how long, and what income or assets could help meet it. Include debts and relevant future obligations, then account for existing individual or employer life cover. Do not count the same resource twice—for example, subtracting savings and then treating those same savings as available again to fund a goal.

Some tools ask for personal expenses or retirement age; others ask more directly about dependants’ expenses and years of support. For example, ICICI Prudential’s HLV page lists age, retirement age, income, savings, loans and existing cover among its inputs, while Standard Chartered India’s tool asks about salary, expenses, other family income and years of support. Check the calculator itself because fields and formulas can change. ICICI Prudential HLV calculator; Standard Chartered India HLV calculator
How to use a calculator step by step
- Define the support need. List who relies on the insured’s income or contribution, their regular expenses, any other household income, and how many years support may be needed.
- Collect current financial details. Gather income, age and likely retirement horizon if requested, outstanding loans, savings and investments, current individual and employer cover, and future obligations.
- Identify the calculator’s method. See whether it projects income, estimates household expenses, or calculates a present value. Note any displayed assumptions for inflation, return on investment, income growth or discounting.
- Check how it handles each resource and obligation. Confirm whether debts and goals are added, and whether savings, other income and current cover are deducted or otherwise included. Employer cover may not remain available after a job change, so consider its connection to continued employment.
- Save the result with its assumptions. Record the tool name and inputs so you can explain why another calculator produces a different estimate.
- Compare actual policies before buying. Read current policy documents for the death-benefit wording, policy term, premium and payment options, exclusions and claim requirements. IRDAI advises prospective buyers to receive appropriate advice and understand claim procedures.
Which method should you use: HLV, needs analysis or an income multiple?
Income replacement or Human Life Value
Human Life Value (HLV) estimates the economic value of income support over a chosen period. Depending on the tool, it may use age and years to retirement, personal expenses, income growth, inflation or return assumptions. Axis Max Life describes a basic HLV approach based on annual income less personal expenses over the years to retirement, adjusted for assumptions. Axis Max Life HLV calculator

Expense or needs replacement
This approach starts with what the household may need for expenses, debts and goals, then considers other income and financial resources. Standard Chartered India’s calculator, for example, requests expenses, other income, liabilities, investments, inflation and current cover. It can be a useful fit when you want to make the family’s needs—not just the insured’s earnings—the starting point. Standard Chartered India HLV calculator
Income multiple as a quick check
A salary multiple can offer a quick sense-check, but it is not a household-specific calculation or a universally correct answer. PNB MetLife presents an income multiple as a common rule of thumb and also discusses HLV, income replacement and expense replacement. Treat any such multiplier as an attributed rule of thumb, not an official standard. PNB MetLife term insurance methods

Why do two calculators give different results?
Different results do not automatically mean one tool is wrong. Compare their inputs and assumptions before treating either estimate as a recommendation:
- Is the starting point income or household expenses?
- How many years of support does each assume?
- Does it subtract personal expenses or account for other household income?
- What inflation, investment-return, income-growth or discount assumptions does it use?
- Are debts and future goals included?
- Are savings, investments and current life cover deducted, and how?
Keep the calculator name and assumptions with each result. This makes it easier to identify whether the difference comes from a different support period, a resource counted differently, or a future-value assumption.

What a calculator cannot tell you
A calculator estimate is not an insurer’s eligibility decision, underwriting assessment, premium quote or claim determination. It cannot replace reading a policy’s current terms. Before buying, confirm the benefit, policy term, exclusions, payment arrangements and claim process in the insurer’s documents, and seek appropriate advice for your circumstances. IRDAI’s guidance says people interested in buying life insurance should receive proper advice so they can choose a product suited to their financial needs. IRDAI: What is Life Insurance?
