Meta’s Muse could put pressure on Apple’s Services business if people begin using an AI agent—not Apple’s apps or interfaces—to discover services and start transactions. Meta says Muse can act through connected apps and a browser, and Spotify has documented an integration that lets users control several listening tasks through Muse. But the risk to Apple is still an analyst’s forecast: there is no evidence here that Muse has reduced Apple’s revenue.
What is Meta Muse?
Muse is Meta’s personal AI agent, powered by its Muse Spark model. Meta announced it on September 8, 2026, describing a tool that can work across apps a person connects and use a browser to carry out tasks. The name can cause confusion: Apple’s App Store also lists “MUSE: be inspired by music,” a separate music-discovery app. The Apple-related argument discussed here concerns Meta’s agent, not that iPhone app.
How Meta says the agent works
According to Meta, Muse can open a browser, fill out forms, negotiate, and keep working on a task after its app is closed. Meta says it may ask the user to approve sensitive actions, including sending an email or making a purchase. These are the company’s descriptions of the product; they do not establish that every task will work reliably or that every action can be completed without further user involvement.
Meta also says Muse runs in a dedicated cloud virtual machine where connected-service data and credentials are stored. The company describes a separate Sentinel agent that approves internet actions, along with controls to manage app connections and permissions, disconnect services, review an audit trail, and opt out of interaction data being used to train Meta’s models. Those are descriptions of Meta’s design and policies, not independent security findings.

What can Muse do with Spotify?
Spotify’s September 23, 2026 announcement documents a concrete example of Muse acting as an interface to another service. Spotify says users can connect it to Muse and ask the agent to play or search for music, podcasts, and audiobooks; save songs; create playlists; and schedule playback. Spotify’s examples include making a road-trip playlist or starting a running playlist at a chosen time.
This matters to the Apple debate because a person could express what they want in Muse and have the agent carry out supported Spotify tasks, rather than navigating Spotify directly for each step. The documented integration covers Spotify functions; it does not show that Muse can control every app or perform every kind of transaction.

Why could Muse matter to Apple’s Services business?
The potential pressure is about who owns the moment when a user decides what to do next. If an agent becomes the place where people describe a need, compare options, and start an action, it could influence discovery and referrals that might otherwise happen through an operating system, app store, or service interface. An agent may therefore challenge parts of Apple’s ecosystem without replacing the iPhone itself.
That is the thesis attributed to Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan in a September 29, 2026 report by 9to5Mac. The report says Mohan sees agents such as Muse as a possible way to capture discovery, referrals, and transaction initiation that currently take place through Apple’s ecosystem. It quotes him: “The risk for Apple is that it can keep every handset sale and still lose discovery, referral, and transaction initiation.” The statement is a forward-looking argument from an investor note, not a measurement of financial damage.

The distinction is important: Meta’s product announcements describe capabilities, while the claim that those capabilities threaten Apple’s economics is an analyst’s interpretation. Apple could retain its device customers while losing some influence over how they find services or initiate actions, but whether that happens—and how it would affect revenue—has not been demonstrated.

Meta said on September 8, 2026, that it was rolling Muse out in the United States on iOS, Android, and the web. It described the service as free for most needs, with subscription plans for people who wanted to do more. Availability and plan details can change; those statements describe Meta’s announcement on that date, not a guarantee of current access in every location.

A September 29 9to5Mac report cited a Sensor Tower estimate, relayed through TechCrunch, that Muse downloads had exceeded 3.4 million as of the week before the report. This is a secondhand estimate, not a download count reported by Meta, and downloads alone do not show active use, completed transactions, or lost Apple revenue.
Meta’s September 8 announcement described Shop Pay and 1Password support as coming soon. That announcement does not establish whether either integration is available now, so their current status should not be inferred from the launch description.

What would show that Muse is a real threat to Apple?
The case will become stronger only if agent use changes measurable behavior—not simply because an agent can perform tasks in principle. Relevant evidence would include sustained use, a broader set of supported services, the share of discovery or transactions routed through agents, and credible measurements of effects on Apple’s ecosystem or Services revenue. The reporting discussed here does not provide those outcome measures or a quantified Apple revenue baseline for this exposure.
For now, Muse is a plausible challenge to Apple’s control of some user interactions, with Spotify providing a documented example of an agent connected to a third-party service. It is not proof that Apple’s Services business has already been impaired.
