Boston closed on January 5, and Silver Spring is also reported closed. The report lists the Cumberland store but gives no closing date, and its current status is not established by the sources cited here.
Which TJ Maxx stores are on the 2026 closure list?
| Location | Reported status | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| 360 Newbury Street, Boston, MA 02115 | Closed | Closed January 5, 2026. A Massachusetts WARN notice says 117 employees would be laid off on that date or during the following 14-day period, and that employees would be offered transfer opportunities. Massachusetts WARN notice identifies the address. [c002] |
| 8661 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910 (Ellsworth Place) | Reported closed | Hindustan Times reported that the store had closed earlier in 2026. Fast Company, republishing an Inc. report, says the mall location closed after a 10-year run and affected about 60 workers. Neither report cited here gives a precise closing date. [c001][c003] |
| 1262 Vocke Road, Cumberland, MD 21502 | Included in reported list; current status not established | The October 2 report lists the address but says closure dates had not been announced. It does not establish whether the store has since closed or remains open. [c001] |
What is known about each closure?
Boston: closed January 5
The state WARN notice provides the clearest documented date among the three locations. It identifies the Newbury Street address and gives January 5, 2026, or the following 14-day period as the layoff window for 117 employees. The notice also says transfer opportunities would be offered. [c002]
Silver Spring: reported closed, exact date not stated
The Ellsworth Place TJ Maxx is described as closed in 2026 reporting, following a decade at the mall. About 60 workers were reported affected, but the sources cited here do not pin down the closing day. [c001][c003]
Cumberland: listed, but no date or confirmed current status
The Vocke Road address is included in the October 2 closure list. That report supplied no closing date, and the available reporting cited here does not confirm whether the store has completed a closure. If you are planning a visit, check current TJ Maxx store information or contact the location before traveling.

Do these closures mean TJ Maxx is pulling back nationwide?
Three location closures do not, by themselves, show a chain-wide retreat. In TJX’s second-quarter FY2027 results, the company reported 1,359 TJ Maxx stores in the United States and 5,285 stores across all its banners and markets as of August 1, 2026. TJX also said it planned to accelerate store-opening growth to 4% beginning in FY2028 and raised its long-term global store target by 500, to 7,500 in its current countries and banners. These are company plans and figures, not a guarantee of future openings at any particular location. TJX second-quarter FY2027 results [c004]
As one example of continued openings, TJ Maxx’s official grand-openings page lists a Kansas City opening dated March 26, 2026. That single opening is not a complete accounting of the chain’s net store growth. TJ Maxx grand openings [c005]

Store openings and closures can coexist as a retailer adjusts its locations and formats. Elizabeth Lafontaine of Placer.ai told Inc., in comments republished by Fast Company, that chains expanding nationwide benefit from more strategic location selection. She also said fleet expansion can involve choosing store formats and locations for particular audiences, sometimes requiring pivots over time. These are Lafontaine’s observations, not an explanation from TJX for each of the three listed locations. [c006]

Fast Company/Inc. also relayed a TJ Maxx spokesperson’s statement to The U.S. Sun: “We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking.” The quoted statement concerns a store closure and should not be read as a company announcement confirming the status or closing date of all three locations.
