The open-source project d4r combines NVIDIA’s official DLSS library with ZLUDA and custom AMD GPU kernels. Its code targets RDNA 4, but the project says runtime and performance on physical RX 9000 cards remain unverified. Its published game benchmark is from an RX 7700 XT instead.
What d4r does to run DLSS 4.5 on Radeon
d4r, short for “DLSS 4 Radeon,” is an adaptation layer that exposes NVIDIA’s DLSS Super Resolution path to a game on AMD hardware. It uses NVIDIA’s official nvngx_dlss.dll, routes CUDA work through ZLUDA on AMD’s ROCm/HIP stack, and replaces selected compute-heavy and texture-related operations with hand-written kernels for RDNA 3 and RDNA 4. It is not FSR renamed as DLSS. The d4r project documentation describes its implementation and supported targets.
The README lists DLSS 3 CNN, DLSS 4 transformer, and DLSS 4.5 transformer models. For RDNA 4, the project also documents native FP8 math through its NativeFp8 option. A listed target means the project has code for that GPU architecture; it does not establish that the software has been validated on every listed graphics card.
Does it work on an RX 9000 card?
The project lists these RDNA 4 targets:
- gfx1201: Radeon RX 9070 XT, RX 9070, RX 9070 GRE, and Radeon AI PRO R9700.
- gfx1200: Radeon RX 9060 XT and RX 9060.
But d4r explicitly says RX 9000 runtime and performance remain unverified on physical RX 9000 hardware. An external video featuring an RX 9070 XT is not a project-published benchmark or confirmation of tested performance. Independent reports likewise describe RDNA 4 support as experimental and note the lack of published physical-card performance and image-quality results. So “DLSS 4.5 on RX 9000” describes the project’s intended hardware support, not a generally proven, ready-to-use capability. The available measurements below should not be read as RX 9000 results.
What the published performance figures show
d4r’s published in-game comparison is from an RX 7700 XT running SILENT HILL Townfall at 2560×1440. The upscalers used the Quality preset, with a 1705×960 input resolution. The figures are project-reported, not independent lab results:

The FSR 4 result came from a different session: d4r’s README says the machine ran about 2–4% slower overall on September 29 than it did on September 27. Treat these numbers as indicative rather than a controlled, same-session comparison. They do not establish which upscaler is faster or looks better on an RX 9000 GPU. The project’s benchmark table provides the measurements and dates.
Harness timing is not game frame rate
Separate D3D12 harness figures on the RX 7700 XT report median GPU time per frame of 2.97 ms for DLSS 4 and 8.23 ms for DLSS 4.5, at Quality resolution from 1706×960 to 2560×1440. These are kernel-path GPU timings, not whole-game frame rates. The project says profiler events add overhead and results for the same build vary by about ±3% per kernel. The native-kernel documentation describes the harness and its qualifications.

What the project supports—and what it does not
d4r currently targets DLSS Super Resolution only. It does not provide Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, or DLSS 5 Neural Rendering. The project also cautions that image-quality parity with DLSS on an RTX GPU has not been established and that artifacts can occur in some games or models. The project README documents these limitations.
Compatibility and image quality are separate questions from whether the code compiles for a GPU target. The published RX 7700 XT results demonstrate a project-reported implementation in one game; they do not prove broad game compatibility, RTX-equivalent image quality, or RX 9000 performance.

Why it is not a simple feature to enable
The documented release is intended for Linux games running through Steam/Proton, with OptiScaler integration. The repository names GE-Proton, ROCm/HIP, and matching NVIDIA DLSS library files among the setup or build dependencies. The packaged release includes a ROCm runtime, while building from source requires additional development tools. Dependencies and setup instructions can change, so consult the project’s current documentation rather than assuming a particular release will work with every system.
The README calls d4r a proof of concept and says it depends on unreleased ZLUDA and vkd3d-proton patches. The project’s own assessment is: “d4r shows that DLSS can run on an AMD GPU, but it is not really that practical for everyday use yet.” That is the project’s statement, not an independent test conclusion. d4r documentation
