18 funny wildlife photos from the 2026 finalist gallery
The comic effect comes from a split-second pose or an unexpected angle. The playful readings below are interpretations of what the pictures seem to show; they are not claims that the animals intended a joke.
-

A meerkat appears to give another a last-minute grooming inspection while the rest of the group poses. The photographer’s title turns a grooming moment into a family-photo ritual.
-

-
“Bears Sharing a Joke” — Charles Janson, Chinitna Bay, Alaska

-

Boren describes a polar bear lying near an ivory gull after gulls had harassed it. The image can suggest the bear is contemplating the bird, but that is a viewer’s reading rather than a reported thought or intention.

What the finalist photos do—and don’t—tell us
A funny wildlife photograph depends on timing and a viewer’s interpretation. Grooming, play-fighting and floating vegetation explain several moments that might otherwise look like staged jokes. Keeping that distinction clear lets the captions stay playful without treating animal expressions or gestures as proof of human motives.
Competition co-founder Tom Sullam described the purpose this way: “We use humour to get people to feel empathy towards wildlife, and it’s that empathy that creates behavioural change for the better.” That is the competition’s stated aim, not evidence that the awards have measured a change in audience behavior.
When were the 2026 Comedy Wildlife Awards winners announced?
When the finalist galleries were published on October 1 and October 3, 2026, the overall, category and highly commended winners were scheduled for December 8, 2026. These 18 images should therefore be read as finalists, not as the eventual winners.
