Hindustan Times reported that Customs imposed a ₹89.91 crore penalty on Ranya Rao in an alleged gold-smuggling case. A Times of India report on the same day put her penalty at ₹102.5 crore. The figures—and the reported total penalties and gold quantities—conflict, and the original adjudication order is needed to confirm the amount.
What Customs reportedly ordered
Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that a 399-page Customs adjudication order imposed more than ₹244 crore in penalties on four people. It attributed a ₹89.91 crore penalty to Rao, ₹49.51 crore to Tarun Konduru Raju, and ₹53.06 crore each to Sahil Jain and Bharat Kumar Jain. The Times of India reported a different set of figures: about ₹270.8 crore in total penalties, including ₹102.5 crore for Rao, ₹62.1 crore for Raju, and ₹53.1 crore each for Sahil and Bharath Jain. It said the order was dated September 30. The Times of India
These accounts cannot be reconciled from the reporting available. The exact penalty should therefore be treated as disputed in contemporaneous coverage, not as an independently verified figure: the original order was not available for review.

What the case is reported to concern
Hindustan Times said investigators alleged that about 113 kg of gold was brought from Dubai into India between March 7, 2024, and February 18, 2025, through a network involving Rao and the other accused. That is an allegation reported by the newspaper, not a finding independently established here.
The Times of India described a different scope: more than 127 kg of gold valued at ₹102.5 crore between March 2024 and March 2025. It reported that 14.2 kg, worth ₹12.6 crore, was seized from Rao on March 3, 2025, after she arrived in Bengaluru from Dubai. According to that report, Customs said 14 other alleged consignments, totaling more than 113 kg, were not physically seized; the order reportedly relied on more than 16 hours of airport CCTV footage and 152 documents. These details are attributed to the Times of India report; the underlying order has not been independently checked.

The quantities and date ranges differ between the two reports, so they should not be combined into a single account of what the order established.
How to distinguish the proceedings
The Customs penalty is an administrative adjudication, not the same thing as a criminal-court outcome. Hindustan Times reported that Customs financial-penalty proceedings are separate from the criminal case and preventive-detention proceedings. Its report also said the accused have legal remedies; it did not establish that Rao or another accused had filed an appeal.

Hindustan Times separately reported an earlier September 2025 Directorate of Revenue Intelligence notice that reportedly sought ₹102 crore from Rao. That earlier notice is distinct from the later Customs adjudication order and should not be mistaken for its penalty amount.

Bengaluru Customs’ general guidance says an appeal to the Commissioner of Customs (Appeals) is generally due within 60 days of receiving the decision or order. The Commissioner may allow a further 30 days where a valid reason for delay is shown. This is general procedural guidance, not confirmation of the deadline in Rao’s case or that an appeal has been filed. The applicable period depends on receipt of the order.
