Chandigarh has extended its anti-drug campaign by a month, Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026. The decision followed a review chaired by UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, after the campaign’s initial deadline of September 30. The report does not give the new end date. Police figures cited in the report describe enforcement and helpline activity; they do not establish that drug availability or related harm has fallen.
Why did Chandigarh extend its anti-drug campaign?
According to Hindustan Times’ October 2 report, the administration decided to continue the time-limited drive for another month at a review meeting chaired by UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria. The first deadline was September 30, but the report does not specify the extension’s precise final date.
The Tribune had earlier quoted Kataria saying: “I have taken a meeting of the administration and Police top brass and told them loud and clear that I would not let anyone sell drugs in Chandigarh post September 30.” That statement referred to the earlier deadline, before the subsequent extension; it is not evidence that the deadline remained in effect or that drug sales stopped.
What did Chandigarh Police report during the crackdown?
Hindustan Times attributed the following September and hotspot figures to Chandigarh Police. They are reported operational outputs, not independent measurements of drug supply or public-health outcomes.

The report also mentions a large recovery of contraband but does not provide enough detail to state a quantity. No total should be inferred from that description.
What do the campaign helpline figures show?
Hindustan Times reported that campaign helplines launched on September 23 received 453 calls and messages in their first week. Police classified 167 Chandigarh inputs as actionable, 97 as general enquiries and 68 as incomplete. The actionable inputs were linked to seven FIRs, seven arrests and 21 preventive detentions, according to the report.

How can Chandigarh residents seek drug-related help?
The Chandigarh Administration lists 14446 as the National Drug Deaddiction Helpline. This is a support helpline for deaddiction, not the campaign’s drug-reporting line. The campaign report gives no number for its local helplines, so residents should not treat 14446 as a tip line.

What do the conviction figures mean?
Hindustan Times reported police figures of 90 convictions among 97 NDPS cases decided from January through August 2026, a reported rate of 92.7%. For 2025, the report gave 116 convictions among 137 cases decided, or 85%.
These are outcomes in cases decided during those periods, not conviction rates for all cases filed or a measure of the new campaign’s impact. They should be read separately from September’s FIR, arrest and detention totals: each figure concerns a different stage of enforcement and the justice process.

The cited reports establish that the administration announced an extension and that police reported enforcement, hotline and case-outcome figures. They do not establish a measured reduction in drug availability, use or harm, and no independent impact evaluation or independently audited account of the policing totals is cited. The extension’s exact end date also remains unspecified in the October 2 report.
Separate coverage described coordination with chemists to prevent illegal sales and misuse of habit-forming medicines. Another report covered demolitions in Ram Darbar; the administration’s statement did not identify the targets as drug peddlers, while claims linking targets to drug activity were attributed to unnamed police officials. Those accounts should not be treated as proof that the demolished properties belonged to people convicted of drug offences.
