Sony has published no QSSR-specific FPS or before-and-after performance measurements in its announcement, so whether it improves performance depends on the game and graphics mode rather than the feature name.
What QSSR is designed to improve
Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling for the standard PS5. Developed from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD, QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. Sony says it improves “image detail and image stability.” Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement positions QSSR as a quicker performance tier, while calling PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro. That is Sony’s description, not an independent benchmark comparing the two.
Does QSSR increase FPS on PS5?
Sony’s announcement does not say QSSR raises frame rates. It includes no before-and-after FPS figures, internal rendering resolutions, frame-time or latency results, or comparisons between graphics modes. “Performance tier” describes QSSR’s computational positioning as an upscaler; it is not evidence that a particular game will run at a higher frame rate with QSSR enabled.
A developer could pair QSSR with a particular resolution or performance target, but the announcement does not explain how each game’s option works or what trade-offs it makes. Without measurements for that title and mode, a claim that QSSR improves FPS or overall game performance would go beyond the published evidence.

Which PS5 games have QSSR?
Sony names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to use the QSSR library. Both are to receive QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Sony says it will make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers and expects more titles to use it, but has not provided a complete future compatibility list. Check a game’s current patch notes and graphics menu to confirm availability.
Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald described QSSR as adding pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry said it would bring more clarity and detail to Ghost of Yōtei. These are developers’ statements about their own games, not independent measurements of frame rate or image quality.

How to judge QSSR in a particular game
When a supported game offers QSSR on/off, compare the settings within the same graphics mode, on the same PS5 and display. Useful evidence includes:
- Frame-rate consistency and frame times, rather than FPS claims without a stated test method.
- Fine-detail clarity and temporal stability, including shimmer, flicker or ghosting in motion.
- Any change in internal rendering resolution or mode-specific trade-off, if the developer or a reliable test establishes it.
These are comparison criteria, not results reported by Sony. Its announcement does not answer those game-by-game questions.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Display settings are a separate issue
PS5 detects a connected TV’s capabilities, and users can adjust video output settings. PlayStation Support’s guide to changing PS5 console resolution covers supported 1440p and 120 Hz output and display requirements. Those settings concern the video signal the screen can show; the guide does not specify QSSR requirements or establish that changing output resolution or refresh rate raises a game’s frame rate.
