You can follow Reddit communities without installing a feed-reader app: join the communities and check your Home feed, use Latest in the mobile app for subscription posts sorted by New, or open one community and sort its posts by New. These are feeds you check yourself—not a promise of alerts whenever a subreddit posts.
Choose the Reddit view that matches what you want
| Option | Best for | Where | How updates appear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home | A general check-in across communities you have joined | Reddit.com and the mobile app | Manual feed; personalized, not strictly chronological |
| Latest | Recent posts from subscribed communities | Reddit mobile app | Manual feed organized by New |
| A community sorted by New | Checking one subreddit for its newest posts | Community page on Reddit | Manual, focused view |
Reddit Help describes Home as a feed of communities you have joined, while its Latest feed is a mobile option that organizes subscription content by New. Reddit’s feed descriptions explain the distinction.
Use Home to keep up with communities you join
Join the communities whose posts you want in your regular Reddit check-in. Their content can appear in Home on Reddit.com or in the app. This is the simplest choice when you want one place to browse several communities and do not need a strictly newest-first stream.
Home is not necessarily chronological or limited to joined communities. Reddit says it can include recommendations from communities you have not joined, and subscription content may be personalized or ranked. If seeing the latest posts matters more than a tailored mix, use Latest on mobile or sort an individual community by New. Reddit’s explanation of content recommendations describes how recommendations and ordering can affect feeds.

Use Latest on the mobile app for a recent-first subscription feed
On the Reddit app, Latest is the documented built-in option for viewing subscription content organized by New. It is the closest fit if you want recent posts from communities you follow, rather than Home’s personalized mix. Reddit Help documents Latest for mobile; it does not identify it as a website feed. See Reddit’s feed guide.
Sort one community by New to check its newest posts
For updates from just one subreddit, open its community page and choose the New sort. Reddit says community pages are sorted by Hot by default, and users can change a community’s default or have it remember the last sort. New gives you a clearer recency-oriented way to inspect that community than relying on Home. Reddit’s recommendations guide covers feed ranking and community sorting.
Find joined communities in the app
Reddit’s app help says the community drawer can include joined communities, followed redditors, and custom feeds. The app’s exact navigation can differ across versions and experiments, so look for the community drawer rather than relying on a fixed sequence of taps. Reddit’s community-management instructions describe what the drawer can contain.
Do not confuse a feed with an alert
Home, Latest, and a community sorted by New are views you open and check. Reddit’s documented notification controls in the cited help page concern chat messages and chat requests; they do not establish that ordinary members can enable alerts for every new post in a community. Reddit’s chat-notification guide covers those chat controls, not a general new-post alert system.

Reddit’s September 10, 2026 changelog describes a split between For You and Following as an experiment that began September 2, 2026, for a small subset of users globally across platforms. Because it is an experiment, the Following view may not appear on your account; Home, Latest on mobile, and community sorting remain the documented options above. Read the changelog entry.
