Recommended Free Tools
Yes—you can use OpenCode with free AI coding models through OpenRouter. Install OpenCode, connect an OpenRouter API key with OpenCode’s /connect command, then deliberately choose a model marked free in OpenRouter’s current catalog. Free access is limited, model availability and terms can change, and an automatic router may select a paid model.
What OpenCode and OpenRouter do
OpenCode is the coding-agent interface; OpenRouter provides access to models from different providers. OpenRouter describes OpenCode as “an open-source AI coding agent available as a terminal interface and desktop app (beta).” OpenCode also offers an IDE experience. The integration lets you connect the two without needing a special GPU or other physical equipment.
The connection itself does not make every model free. Your cost, limits, model capabilities, and data handling depend on the model and provider you select.
How to connect OpenCode to OpenRouter
- Install OpenCode. Use the current instructions and package-manager options on the official OpenCode site. Its installation command can change, so check the site rather than relying on a command copied from an older guide.
- Create an OpenRouter account and API key. Follow the OpenRouter OpenCode integration guide and create a key through OpenRouter’s key interface. Treat it like a password: do not expose it in a screenshot, prompt, or checked-in repository. The guide says keys begin with
sk-or-, but key formats may change. - Connect from OpenCode. Open a session, run
/connect, choose OpenRouter, and enter the key when prompted. Follow the integration guide if the current prompts or labels differ. - Select a free model explicitly. Find a model in OpenRouter’s free-model catalog and choose its current model ID in OpenCode. Check the model’s displayed price before substantial use.
- Try a small, non-sensitive coding task. Confirm that the model works with the tools your coding task needs before relying on it for repository-wide changes.
What “free” means on OpenRouter
As displayed on OpenRouter’s pricing page on October 3, 2026, the Free plan lists 25+ free models, four free providers, and a limit of 50 requests per day. These are current-plan figures, not a promise of unlimited access. OpenRouter’s limits documentation explains that applicable free-model limits can depend on account conditions; check your account’s current limits before planning around a daily allowance.

- Large extended coding mouse pad (16x32 inches) provides full desk coverage for keyboard and mouse. Smooth surface ensures precise movement, while the anti-slip rubber base keeps it stable during long coding sessions. Durable stitched edges prevent fraying—built for daily professional use.
A free catalog entry is not a guarantee that a model will remain free or available. Models, pricing, provider availability, and terms can change, so verify the listing at the time you use it.
How to choose a free model for coding
Do not treat the catalog’s rank as a quality score. OpenRouter says its free-model rankings reflect API token usage over the trailing seven days—adoption, not coding quality or benchmark performance.

- Confirm the exact model ID and price. Select a free variant rather than assuming that a model family’s every version costs nothing.
- Check tool support. A coding agent may need tool or function-call support to work effectively. Confirm the model’s current capabilities in the catalog; not every model is necessarily suited to every agent workflow.
- Consider context capacity. A model’s context limit affects how much code and task information it can handle at once.
- Expect availability and speed to vary. Free providers may have rate limits or availability constraints, so a model that works for one task may not be dependable for another.
- Review data terms. Provider-specific notices in the catalog may state that inputs or outputs can be retained or used for training. Check the selected model’s terms before sending proprietary or sensitive code.
How to avoid unexpected charges
OpenRouter support warns that automatic routing can select paid models. When avoiding inference charges matters, choose a specifically free model and verify its current price rather than relying on a general automatic router. If the free allowance is insufficient, OpenRouter also documents paid inference; switching to a paid route means model usage is no longer free.

Common setup problems
- The connection flow has changed: Use the current OpenRouter integration guide for its documented
/connectflow and prompts. - The model cannot be selected or used: Check that its ID is current in the catalog, then verify availability and required tool support.
- You hit a limit: Check the applicable account limits. Free access is quota-constrained, and account conditions can affect the ceiling.
- You are unsure whether a request costs money: Inspect the selected model’s current pricing and disable or avoid automatic routing that could use a paid model.
- You are handling sensitive code: Check the selected provider’s data terms before submitting it; privacy practices are not uniform across free models.
