FileBrowser Quantum: A Self-Hosted Web File Manager, Explained

FileBrowser Quantum is a self-hosted web file manager with project-described authentication, sharing, search, previews and API features. Compare its version tracks and consider indexing and unsupported functions before deploying it.

FileBrowser Quantum lets you manage files through a web browser, but it is software you install on infrastructure you provide—not a cloud storage service hosted by its developers. It is worth considering if you want browser-based access alongside user accounts, permissions, sharing, search and file previews or editing. The main trade-offs are choosing the right version and deployment route, and accounting for the resources its file indexing may require.

What FileBrowser Quantum does

FileBrowser Quantum is a free, open-source, self-hosted web file manager. Once deployed, it provides a browser interface for working with files in configured sources. The project describes support for multiple sources, a responsive interface, real-time search and updates, and directory-level rules that can be scoped to users or groups. These are project-described capabilities, not independent performance test results. See the project overview and repository.

Because it is self-hosted, you supply and maintain the environment where it runs. The project does not provide hosted storage, and the available documentation does not establish a particular server, NAS or drive as necessary.

Which version should you evaluate?

The official documentation distinguishes two version tracks: v1.5.x, labelled stable, and v2.0.0, labelled beta on the About page last updated September 9, 2026. Beta status can change, so confirm the current labels in the Getting Started guides and About page before choosing a release.

If you prioritize a stable track, start by assessing v1.5.x. If you are evaluating v2.0.0, treat it as beta according to that page state and consider whether beta software suits your use. The supplied documentation does not establish that the two tracks have identical features, upgrade paths or compatibility.

Deployment depends on your environment

Getting Started provides Docker and native installation guides for Linux, macOS and Windows. That breadth gives prospective users options, but does not make every route equally suitable for every setup. Choose based on where you intend to run it, how you manage updates, and what deployment method you can reliably maintain. Follow the instructions for the specific version track you select; do not assume that commands or upgrade steps transfer between tracks.

As a self-hosted application, FileBrowser Quantum also places ongoing responsibility for the host and its configuration with you. The project documentation cited here does not prescribe one universal hardware configuration, so a fixed server or memory recommendation would be unsupported.

Identity, access rules and sharing

The project highlights several authentication options: OpenID Connect (OIDC), LDAP, external JWT, two-factor authentication and proxy authentication. It also describes user management and granular access rules, including directory-level rules scoped to users or groups. Those options may matter when you need to fit a web file manager into an existing identity setup or separate access by person or group. Check the documentation for the chosen release to confirm the configuration details you need.

FileBrowser Quantum also describes configurable file sharing. The project overview does not establish a universal sharing policy or a specific set of safeguards for every deployment, so evaluate the available controls against your own requirements before exposing shares beyond trusted users.

Search, previews, editing and API access

Search and indexing

The repository warns that source files and directories are indexed by default. Search depends on that indexing, and larger or more complex configured filesystems can increase resource requirements. The project gives no universal memory figure, and the available sources do not provide benchmark results or a measured search speed. Consider the scale and structure of the sources you plan to configure rather than relying on a generic hardware estimate.

Previews and editing

The project describes file previews and editing as part of its feature set. The available overview does not specify support for every file type or establish what integrations may be required, so verify the formats and editing workflows you depend on in the documentation for your selected version.

API

The project highlights API tokens and Swagger documentation. This may be useful if you need programmatic access, but the overview alone does not establish that a particular automation workflow is supported. Check the API documentation for the endpoints and authentication behavior your use case requires.

What it does not provide

Two limitations are explicit in the repository: jobs are not supported, and shell commands have been removed. If scheduled or background jobs, or running shell commands through the file manager, are requirements, verify whether your workflow can be handled elsewhere before choosing FileBrowser Quantum.

More broadly, it is a file manager rather than a project-provided cloud storage service. You remain responsible for the deployment and the files’ storage environment.

Is FileBrowser Quantum a good fit?

  • Consider it if you want to manage files in a browser on infrastructure you control and value the project-described identity, permission, sharing, search, preview, editing or API features.
  • Plan carefully if your sources are large, because default indexing can raise resource needs and the project does not state a universal requirement.
  • Check alternatives or adapt your workflow if you depend on built-in jobs or shell commands, which the repository says are not supported.
  • Verify the release track and deployment guide before installation, particularly if you are considering the v2.0.0 beta rather than v1.5.x stable as labelled in the cited documentation.

When comparing it with another self-hosted web file manager, compare release maturity, installation and upgrade paths, identity-provider support, permission granularity, sharing controls, indexing impact, preview and editing needs, API coverage, and missing functions. A feature list alone does not establish that one product is better for your environment.
