It is free and open source, and the vendor lists version 2.5.0 for macOS, Windows, and Linux, released September 30, 2026. It can also scan remote machines over SSH and cloud storage through rclone. Those capabilities make it useful for locating large items; they do not tell you whether an item is safe to remove.
What SquirrelDisk does
SquirrelDisk is a disk usage analyzer: it scans storage and presents folders and files according to the space they occupy. Its official product page calls it “A free, open-source disk usage analyzer for macOS, Windows and Linux.” The project’s press kit names Adileo Barone as developer, says it first appeared in 2022, and identifies AGPL-3.0 as its license. How to read its visualizations
Sunburst chart
The whole-disk view is a sunburst: folders appear as slices sized by disk use, with nested slices representing contents. The chart builds as a scan runs. Click a slice to open that folder’s contents; click the centre to move back up. A side list also presents contents, with larger items first.
Treemap
SquirrelDisk also offers a treemap view, another way to compare the relative size of items visually. The vendor describes the chart as live and animated, but no measured scan-speed comparison is available here; treat “fast” as product positioning, not a performance guarantee. The vendor says SquirrelDisk checks GitHub for updates at startup and that update checks can be disabled. Its macOS and Windows pages explain how to proceed past platform warnings. Scanning local, remote, and cloud storage
Local disks
Use the visual overview to identify large directories, then inspect their contents in the side list before deciding what to do. A scan may be incomplete if the account running the app cannot access some directories; the Linux guide explicitly notes this permission limitation.
Remote machines over SSH
SquirrelDisk describes scanning remote machines over SSH. Its SSH feature page says it may place a helper in ~/.cache/squirreldisk to speed scanning, and can fall back to standard find or du commands. Different tools may count some storage differently. SquirrelDisk says cloud-only files count as zero because they do not take up local disk space, and linked folders are counted once. On Windows, the vendor specifically says hard links in WinSxS can make SquirrelDisk’s figure lower than Explorer’s because Explorer may count linked data more than once. Deleting files safely
Finding a large file does not establish that it is disposable. Identify what it is and what uses it before removing it. SquirrelDisk’s cleanup collector, as described in its platform guides, offers choices such as moving items to Trash or the Recycle Bin, permanent deletion, or backing them up to a folder or cloud storage before deletion. Availability of documented choices may vary by platform. SquirrelDisk guides
Windows system files
The Windows guide warns against manually deleting hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys, which Windows manages. If you deliberately want to disable hibernation, the documented command is powercfg /hibernate off. The guide advises leaving the page file to Windows unless you understand why it should be changed. SSD deletion is not secure erasure
On Linux, the vendor cautions that deleting files may not immediately remove old blocks on SSDs or Btrfs, and points to LUKS full-disk encryption for data protection. Its Windows guide similarly says BitLocker is the protection for data on SSDs when old blocks may remain. A delete option should therefore not be treated as a secure erase feature. When another tool may fit better
If you want a graphical Linux disk-usage tool, the SquirrelDisk Linux guide names Baobab and Filelight as alternatives. For a headless server, it points to ncdu, a command-line option. Choose based on the system you need to scan, whether you need SSH or cloud access, the interface you prefer, and how you want to handle cleanup—not on an unverified speed ranking.
