Reading and marking up PDFs
The app advertises paginated and continuous scrolling modes, multiple PDF tabs, auto-scroll, and PDF reflow where applicable. For annotation, it lists ink tools, highlights, and notes. These features make it relevant to someone who wants to read and make basic marks on a PDF without moving to a separate editor; the available tools and behavior should still be checked in the particular edition and platform.

On a supported tablet, a stylus may be useful for handwriting or ink annotations, but the developer’s materials do not establish that a particular stylus or device is compatible, or that a stylus is required. Highlighting and notes are also advertised annotation options.
Which editions and platforms are available?
The project describes Android builds and desktop editions for Windows and Linux. Its README distinguishes Play Store Android, OSS Android, OSS Offline Android, and Standard and Offline desktop editions. The official download page lists Android builds, Windows MSIs, and Linux packages. Release files and feature parity can change, so check the current download page and the edition name before installing.

The edition descriptions come from the project README and are not a substitute for inspecting the permissions and feature list of a specific release. “Offline” or “OSS” alone should not be treated as proof that every build has identical features or privacy properties.
What stays local, and what can use the network?
Episteme’s Standard privacy policy says imported files and library metadata are stored primarily on the device. It also says core reading can be used without enabling sync or AI. That describes a local reading path, not an unconditional guarantee that all editions or features operate without network access.

Sync and Google Drive
If cloud sync is enabled, the policy says library metadata and reading state may be synced, including progress, bookmarks, annotations, shelves, device records, and related sync data. It also says book files may be uploaded to an app-specific hidden folder in the user’s Google Drive account. The policy’s wording is conditional: this concerns users who enable sync, not every person who opens a file locally.
AI features and cloud text-to-speech
For AI requests such as recaps, dictionary lookups, or summaries, and for cloud TTS, the policy says the app sends the content needed to fulfil the request. Depending on the feature, that may include selected text, an excerpt, generated context, or an image of the current page. The policy says the service provider’s terms govern provider logging, retention, and data use.

Accounts, diagnostics, billing, and support
The Standard policy also describes data flows connected with account sign-in, purchases, diagnostics, and support. These are separate from simply reading a local file, but users considering the Standard edition should consult the policy for the details applicable to their use.
Episteme’s Standard privacy policy, last updated May 22, 2026, states: “We do not sell your personal information or use your documents to train our own AI models.” This is the developer’s policy statement, not an independent security audit. Google Play’s developer-provided Data Safety section separately says “No data shared with third parties” while also listing possible collection of personal information, app information and performance, and device or other IDs. Those are distinct disclosures with different scopes; one should not be substituted for the other.

Is Episteme a good fit?
Episteme is worth considering if you want one app for a range of personal files and value PDF markup alongside reading controls. Its local reading path and optional online features can suit different needs, provided you choose an edition deliberately and leave cloud features off if you do not want those data flows.
- Potential fit: you read files you already have, need basic PDF highlights, notes, or ink, and want options such as reflow, themes, and typography.
- Check before relying on it: exact format support in your chosen edition, annotation tools on your platform, and whether a feature you want requires an online service.
- Look elsewhere or test carefully: your workflow depends on a particular DRM-protected bookstore, annotation export behavior, or an independently verified privacy or security guarantee. The available product information does not establish those capabilities or guarantees.
The developer advertises full-text search and OCR, imported fonts, system text-to-speech, and cloud TTS; Google Play also describes optional Pro smart tools and sync. These are publisher claims rather than independent test results, and online functions should be evaluated separately from local reading.
