The right screenshot shortcut depends on your laptop’s operating system. On Windows 11, use Windows + Shift + S to choose a capture area; on Mac, use Shift-Command-3 for the whole screen or Shift-Command-4 for a selection; on Chromebook, use Ctrl + Show windows. Here’s what each shortcut captures, whether it copies or saves the image, and where to find it.

Screenshot shortcuts at a glance

System Whole screen Window or selected area Result and default location
Windows 11 Windows + Print Screen saves a PNG. Print Screen copies the whole screen. Windows + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture toolbar. Alt + Print Screen copies the active window. Windows + Print Screen saves to Pictures > Screenshots. A Snipping Tool capture is copied to the clipboard; open its notification to edit or save it. Snipping Tool settings control automatic saving and its folder.
Mac Shift-Command-3 Shift-Command-4, then drag to select an area. For a window or menu bar, press Space after Shift-Command-4, then click. Keyboard captures save to the desktop by default. Hold Control with a shortcut to copy the capture to the clipboard instead.
Chromebook Ctrl + Show windows Shift + Ctrl + Show windows starts partial capture; use the toolbar for full-screen, partial, or window capture. Screenshots save to Downloads by default. Screen Capture settings let you choose another folder.

Key labels, settings, and keyboard layouts can change what works. If a key is missing or a shortcut differs, check the capture toolbar and your system’s shortcut or keyboard settings.

When the keyboard does not have Show windows

On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google specifies Ctrl + Shift + F5 as an alternative. Google’s general shortcut reference covers US customers using a standard English QWERTY keyboard. On external Windows or Mac keyboards, the Windows or Command key may stand in for Search/Launcher in relevant Chromebook shortcuts. If the label or behavior differs, check the Chromebook’s View keyboard shortcuts page or the Screen Capture toolbar.

Why the same shortcut does not work on every laptop

Screenshot keys are tied to the operating system and keyboard, not simply to whether a computer is a laptop. Windows may use a Print Screen key with different abbreviations; Chromebook layouts use Show windows, and external keyboards may not include it; Mac shortcuts use Command. Regional layouts and system settings can also affect key names or behavior.

  • Check the physical key label and the on-screen capture toolbar before substituting keys.
  • On Windows, use Snipping Tool settings to review automatic saving and its destination.
  • On Mac, use Keyboard settings for shortcut customization and Screenshot panel Options for the save destination.
  • On Chromebook, use the View keyboard shortcuts page or Screen Capture settings.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 consumer guidance and Google’s Chromebook shortcut reference each specify US-market scope; Google also specifies a standard English QWERTY keyboard. Apple’s user guide provides a macOS version selector. These qualifications matter if your regional layout, device, or OS version differs.
