The joke in “uses none of them” is about the umbrella company’s name—not a claim that Paramount and Warner Bros. are being erased: Ellison said both studio identities would remain in the spotlight.
What will the combined company be called?
Skydance, according to Ellison’s October 2, 2026 announcement, reported by AJ Dellinger in AOL. Ellison presented it as the new corporate identity for the combined company, rather than as a replacement name for the Paramount and Warner Bros. studios.
The announcement came ahead of the transaction’s reported scheduled closing date of October 6, 2026. On October 2, that close was still in the future; the AOL report does not establish that the transaction subsequently closed.
Why choose a new name when the company already has two famous studios?
Ellison’s stated rationale was to give the combined company a distinct identity without diminishing the studios’ established names. In the statement reproduced by AOL from his post on X, he wrote: “Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren’t rewriting history — we’re equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling,”

He also said: “Both have distinct identities, extraordinary legacies and brands that have resonated with audiences for generations,” and that the company wanted “a name that would give the combined company an identity of its own while allowing Paramount and Warner Bros. — and all our extraordinary brands — to remain in the spotlight.” Those are Ellison’s descriptions of the intended brand arrangement, not confirmation of how the studios will be managed.
Are Paramount and Warner Bros. losing their names?
Ellison said the studio identities would remain visible. That addresses the announced branding intent, but the AOL article does not establish the final presentation of the labels across films, television, or other businesses. Nor does it say how much operational independence either studio would retain under the Skydance corporate umbrella.

That distinction matters: a corporate name identifies the parent company; it does not, by itself, settle whether the businesses beneath it keep separate leaders, decision-making authority, or release practices. The October 2 announcement and report leave those questions open.
How large is the combination, according to the report?
AOL described the combined Paramount and Warner Bros. studio histories as spanning more than 200 years and put the purchase value at $110 billion. Both figures are the article’s 2026 framing; the history figure is not presented there as a separately calculated total.

What had been reported about the deal before the naming announcement?
A September 21, 2026 Gizmodo report, “It Looks Like Warner Bros. Will Soon Belong to Paramount as States Back Down,” described states involved in an antitrust challenge agreeing to settle and recounted terms reported by The New York Times, including a board intended to protect news independence and film-distribution commitments. That was dated background, not proof of the deal’s final governance arrangements or that it closed.
The AOL naming story is commentary, not a corporate filing or governance document. Its colorful judgments are the writer’s rhetoric; the concrete point supported by the report is narrower: Ellison announced Skydance as the combined company’s corporate identity while saying Paramount and Warner Bros. would remain visible.
