But Google’s announcement does not establish a consumer-facing screen that identifies which app is slowing your phone. A recurring afternoon slowdown still needs to be diagnosed on the device itself.
What Android 17’s memory feature actually does
Google says Android 17 adds limits on how much memory individual apps can use. The aim is to prevent an app’s excessive RAM use from harming the phone’s overall performance and battery life. Google described the feature as: “Under the hood, Android 17 introduces app memory limits to ensure apps never use too much RAM, helping improve your device’s overall performance and battery life.” (Google’s Android 17 announcement, June 16, 2026.)
These are system memory-management measures, not proof that Android has diagnosed a particular slowdown for you. Android developer material says limits depend on the device’s RAM, and an app that exceeds its limit may be slowed or terminated. The developer post says the feature initially arrived on Pixel, with broader manufacturer adoption planned over the following year; exact availability therefore depends on your device and software build. Does Android 17 show which app is slowing your phone?
Google’s reviewed Android 17 announcement describes app memory limits, but does not document a consumer-facing “Memory Use” screen that identifies a culprit app or explains an afternoon slowdown. The feature’s existence should not be confused with a personal diagnostic report. If a memory display appears on your phone, verify it on that specific model and build rather than assuming it is a standard Android 17 screen.

Nor does the timing alone identify the cause. A phone that gets slow every afternoon could have several possible software or device-specific causes; the available information does not establish one for your phone, or show that this is a common pattern among Android users.
How to troubleshoot a recurring Android slowdown
Try the least disruptive checks first. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so use your phone’s Settings search if a path differs. Google’s slow Android device guidance recommends these steps:

- Restart the phone. Then check whether the slowdown returns at its usual time.
- Check for Android updates and available storage. Google says a phone can start having problems when less than 10% of its storage is free. That is a storage warning threshold, not a measure of RAM use or proof of the cause.
- Update your apps. Also close apps you are not using; if one app seems stuck, force-stop it using your phone’s app settings.
- Test in safe mode. Safe mode helps check whether a downloaded app may be involved. If the slowdown goes away, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, checking after each removal to see whether the problem returns.
- If the issue persists, contact the phone’s manufacturer. If the problem seems to be slow internet rather than slow device response, check the connection as well.
When a factory reset is worth considering
A factory reset is a last-resort troubleshooting step, not a first response to an unexplained daily slowdown. It removes data and apps from the phone. Google advises backing up your data before resetting; consider doing so only after less disruptive checks have failed and you understand how to restore what you need.
