A friendly avatar does not make an AI agent harmless. If you connect one to email, messages or other accounts, it may be able to read existing private information—and, depending on the permissions you grant, send or share information on your behalf. Treat the permission screen, not the mascot, as the measure of what it can do.
What recent AI-agent incidents show
In an Engadget article, Karissa Bell described two incidents involving Meta Muse, whose mascot is called Jolly. They illustrate why the important question is not whether an agent looks approachable, but what access it has and what it can do with that access. Read Bell’s account.
A pickup address shared through Marketplace
Matt Robb asked Muse to help sell items on Facebook Marketplace. The agent sent his home pickup address to people who made offers. The later explanation was that Robb had selected “allow always,” rather than “allow one time,” authorizing address sharing beyond a single instance. A choice that sounds like a minor setting can therefore change whether a disclosure is limited or ongoing.
Message access that surprised a user
Jason Aten reported that Muse appeared able to read his text messages despite his belief that he had denied access. He later learned that message syncing from his computer was involved. Meta executive David Singleton said syncing was opt-in. The incident still raises a practical concern: a feature can surprise users even when a company says it requires opt-in. Aten’s reaction was, “I still think that’s really bad.”

What an AI agent may see when you connect an account
Account access can reveal more than the information needed for the immediate task. An agent connected to email may be able to encounter documents previously sent through that account, such as identity, tax or medical records. Depending on the services and permissions involved, the data at stake can also include credit-card details, text messages, health information and files in productivity applications.
That does not mean every agent automatically sees all of those categories. The actual exposure depends on which account you connect, what access you grant, how the service handles synced data and what the agent is asked to do. The key point is that an old document or message may be in scope even when your current request has nothing to do with it.

How to judge an agent before connecting an account
Assess a proposed use along three dimensions: how broad the permission is, how sensitive the connected data is, and how difficult the agent’s action would be to undo. The risk rises when permissions persist, the account contains sensitive information, or the agent can take an external action without your review.
| Dimension | Lower-consequence case | Higher-consequence case | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Permission scope | One-time access for a specific task | Persistent access such as “allow always” | Whether the choice applies once or to future requests |
| Data sensitivity | A low-stakes service, such as the OpenTable or Spotify examples Bell gave | Email, identity or tax documents, financial details, health data or private messages | What else is stored or synced in the account—not only what the task needs |
| Action reversibility | Drafting or tracking information for you to review | Sending, sharing, buying or publishing | Whether you can inspect and confirm the action before it happens |
How to limit what an AI agent can do
The following precautions are practical lessons from the reported incidents, not a guarantee that a service will handle every permission as expected.

- Start with the account, not the task. Before connecting anything, consider what sensitive messages, documents or synced information the account contains.
- Use one-time access when available. Read the wording carefully. Choose a permission limited to the current task rather than a persistent option such as “allow always” when that is all you need.
- Keep sensitive accounts out of early experiments. Avoid connecting email, financial, health or private-communication accounts unless the task genuinely requires them and you are comfortable with the access involved.
- Separate experiments from consequential work. Try an agent with a low-stakes service before considering a workflow involving private data or important decisions.
- Require review before external actions. Keep a human confirmation step before the agent sends a message, shares an address, makes a purchase or publishes content. Prefer a draft you can inspect over an action that happens automatically.
- Audit access after the task. Review connected accounts and permissions, and remove access you no longer need where the service allows it.
Why the agent’s appearance is the wrong safety signal
Meta Muse’s Jolly and OpenAI’s colorful, muppet-like Dots make AI agents feel personable. That presentation does not narrow their technical authority. An agent can still read connected data or take an external action when its permissions allow it. A cute assistant may be pleasant to use; its access should be evaluated just as carefully as any other software that can reach personal accounts.
