Called the Blockbuster Box or Blockbuster Pizza Box, it used a fitted lens, the pizza saver and a customer’s phone to project short videos onto a wall.
What the Pizza Hut projector box was
Pizza Hut introduced the Blockbuster Box as a test-market promotion in Hong Kong in 2015. The package combined a double-pizza meal deal with a cardboard box designed to become a simple phone projector. Pizza Hut’s own account describes the launch as a test market at the end of April and says expansion to other regional markets was being considered at the time: Pizza Hut’s campaign blog.
Design and awards pages identify the same project as Pizza Hut’s Hong Kong campaign, including Design Bridge’s project page, creative director Andrew Reynolds’ account and The One Club’s 2016 award entry. The available documentation does not establish a separate Japanese version.
How the box turned a phone into a projector
- Order the promotional meal. The box was associated with a double-pizza deal.
- Remove the pizza. A pizza saver sat in the center of the pie. For this campaign, it also carried a bespoke projector lens.
- Reconfigure the box. Folds in the double-decker box created a phone cradle and positioned the lens at the front.
- Insert the lens and phone. The pizza saver supplied both the lens holder and, according to the campaign creative director, the phone stand.
- Scan the code and play a film. A QR code led customers to the viewing experience. The phone supplied the image, while the lens enlarged it onto a nearby wall.
This was a compact optical novelty rather than a digital projector. The phone generated the video; the cardboard enclosure and lens provided a basic projection path. The sources make no claim about brightness, resolution, throw distance or performance in a lit room.

What customers could watch
Pizza Hut said customers could select short films in romance, action, science-fiction or horror. Reynolds described a companion app with a selection of films and documentaries. The documented campaign does not establish whether that app or its QR-linked content is still online.
Can you still get the original box?
There is no reliable evidence in the campaign documentation that the original Blockbuster Box, its bespoke lens or the associated meal is currently sold. It should be treated as a historical promotional package, not a standard Pizza Hut product or a regularly available projector accessory. Availability, if any, would depend on a separately announced local promotion.

What to buy if you want the same effect
A generic smartphone projector lens kit can recreate the broad idea, but it is not the Pizza Hut package. Check four practical details before buying:
- whether the kit includes both a lens and a stable phone holder;
- which phone sizes, orientations and camera positions it supports;
- how much assembly and focusing the cardboard housing requires;
- whether you must supply a wall or other projection surface and your own video content.
A portable mini projector is a different product category: it has its own light source and electronics and is intended for functional viewing. It should not be described as a replacement component for the Blockbuster Box.

Why the “Japan” description is misleading
“Pizza box projector” and “Pizza Hut box that turns into a projector” accurately describe the mechanism, but the location matters. Every reviewed campaign source that identifies a market places this promotion in Hong Kong. Calling it Japanese changes a documented detail and can send readers looking for a release that the available evidence does not show.
