A secondary report describes work on wireless file sharing similar to Quick Share or AirDrop, possibly for high-quality transfers without internet access, but WhatsApp has not published a launch notice or technical specification.
Is WhatsApp Local Network Share released?
Not according to the official material currently available. The feature is best treated as a reported development rather than something you can enable in WhatsApp today.
The report describes a possible wireless transfer system that could move files between nearby devices, including across phone platforms, without an internet connection. It does not establish a release date, supported app versions, countries, file-size limits, transfer speeds, or whether the feature will ship at all.
If WhatsApp eventually launches it, availability could depend on the WhatsApp version, phone operating system and region. An option appearing in a video, beta build or third-party article is not proof of a public release.

What WhatsApp officially supports now
Chat-history migration from iPhone to Android
Meta’s March 2026 newsroom announcement says WhatsApp chat transfer supports moving chat history from iOS to Android and is rolling out broadly. This is a device-migration workflow, not a general-purpose local file-sharing mode.
Google’s documented migration procedure, published October 26, 2021, uses a USB-C-to-Lightning cable and a QR code to copy WhatsApp conversations, media and other data from an iPhone to an Android phone. Google product manager Paul Dunlop described the process this way:
“Your WhatsApp chat history will simply be copied from your iPhone to your new Android phone, and we’ll automatically make sure you don’t receive new messages on the old device while the transfer is in progress.”

The cable is relevant to this specific migration route. It is not evidence that WhatsApp has released Wi-Fi sharing for individual photos or files.

Multi-device access
Meta Engineering’s July 14, 2021 explanation says a WhatsApp account can be used on a phone and up to four other non-phone devices simultaneously. Each companion connects independently while maintaining end-to-end encryption. That feature synchronizes account access; it is not a nearby-device file-transfer protocol.
What happens after you send a file
WhatsApp’s Help Center states that when a chat, photo, video, file or voice message is shared, recipients receive a copy and can forward or share it. End-to-end encryption protects the message while it is being delivered, but it cannot prevent a recipient from retaining, exporting or forwarding content they receive.

Can you share WhatsApp files without internet access?
WhatsApp has not documented a supported, user-facing LAN method for sending an individual file offline. Therefore, there is no confirmed WhatsApp setting that turns nearby phones into an offline file-sharing network.
The reported Local Network Share concept may eventually address that use case, but its offline behavior remains unverified. Do not confuse it with chat-history migration: the documented iPhone-to-Android process uses a physical cable and QR-based setup, and is designed to move an account’s history rather than provide ad hoc photo exchange.
How to transfer WhatsApp photos between Android and iPhone
For a complete WhatsApp history
- Use the supported iPhone-to-Android migration process on the Android phone’s setup or transfer flow.
- Connect the phones with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, following Google’s documented hardware requirement for this route.
- Scan the QR code shown during the transfer setup and allow the migration to copy WhatsApp conversations and media.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before treating the Android phone as the active device; the documented process prevents new messages from arriving on the old device while migration is in progress.
This procedure is for moving history and associated media. It is not a Wi-Fi-only method for selecting a few photos.

For one or a few individual photos
There is no confirmed WhatsApp Local Network Share workflow to follow. A nearby-transfer app or an operating-system sharing feature would be a separate tool, with its own permissions, compatibility rules and privacy model; it should not be presented as a WhatsApp feature or endorsement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why would WhatsApp ask for local-network access?
Operating systems treat local-area-network discovery as a privacy-sensitive capability:
- Apple says that, in iOS 14 or later and iPadOS 14 or later, an app that wants to interact with devices on the network must request permission the first time it tries to browse the local network.
- Android 16 documentation describes runtime LAN protections intended to limit risks such as device fingerprinting and location inference through network access.
If a future WhatsApp release scans for nearby recipients, those protections could produce a system permission prompt. Allowing the prompt would grant the operating-system network capability requested by the app; it would not by itself prove that a transfer is encrypted end to end, that the feature is officially launched everywhere, or that recipients cannot keep the file. Denying permission would normally prevent the app from discovering nearby devices, but the exact behavior would depend on WhatsApp’s eventual implementation.

How the reported feature would compare with nearby-sharing tools
The important differences are the same ones to check when comparing any future WhatsApp implementation with Quick Share, AirDrop or a third-party LAN tool:
| Comparison point | WhatsApp Local Network Share status |
|---|---|
| Cross-platform reach | Cross-platform transfers are reported as a possibility; supported device combinations are not stated. |
| Internet requirement | Use without internet is reported as a possibility, not a confirmed capability. |
| OS permissions | A LAN implementation would intersect with Apple’s Local Network permission and Android’s LAN protections. |
| Quality and file-size limits | High-quality transfer is mentioned in the report; size limits, formats and compression behavior are not stated. |
| Sender and receiver confirmation | The pairing, consent and confirmation screens have not been specified. |
| Encryption and recipient control | WhatsApp describes end-to-end encryption for messages, but recipients can retain and forward content they receive. |
| Availability | No official WhatsApp launch notice, supported version list or geographic rollout is established. |
Quick Share, AirDrop and third-party tools should be evaluated from their own published specifications. Their presence on a phone does not mean WhatsApp can invoke them, and installing a separate LAN tool does not make it part of WhatsApp.
Quick Recap
What to do until there is an official announcement
- For iPhone-to-Android account migration, use the documented cable-and-QR process rather than waiting for an unconfirmed wireless feature.
- For ordinary WhatsApp conversations, do not assume that a “Local Network Share” label in an unofficial screenshot is available in your app.
- Check WhatsApp’s official release notes and your app’s version and region before relying on any claimed rollout.
- Remember that encryption protects delivery, not what a recipient does with a copy.
