WhatsApp’s Unread chat filter narrows the Chats screen to conversations containing messages you have not opened or have marked unread. Open WhatsApp, tap Unread in the filter bar at the top of Chats, and tap All to restore the complete list.
What the Unread filter shows
WhatsApp introduced three chat views—All, Unread and Groups—in an announcement dated April 16, 2024. The Unread view includes chats with messages you marked as unread and chats containing messages you have not opened. WhatsApp describes its purpose as helping you prioritize conversations that need a response or catch-up. Meta’s launch announcement provides the original description.
The current WhatsApp Messaging page still lists these filters and defines Unread in the same way.
How to filter unread WhatsApp chats
- Open WhatsApp and go to the Chats tab.
- At the top of the chat list, tap Unread.
- Read or reply to the conversations shown in the filtered list.
- Tap All when you want to see every chat again.
The filter is a view of your chat list, not a separate inbox. Selecting it does not delete, archive or otherwise change messages.

What each WhatsApp chat filter is for
| Filter | Chats shown | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| All | Your complete Chats list | Normal browsing |
| Unread | Chats with messages marked unread or not yet opened | Catching up and finding conversations that need attention |
| Groups | Group chats, including Community subgroups as described in the launch announcement | Finding group conversations |
WhatsApp’s design team says placing the filters at the top of Chats is intended to help people locate conversations without scrolling through the entire inbox. See Design at Meta’s explanation of the WhatsApp interface update.
Unread filter versus marking a chat unread
These are related but different actions. The filter collects chats that are already unread because you have not opened them or because you explicitly marked them unread. Marking a chat unread changes that chat’s status; tapping Unread simply displays chats that meet the status criteria.

Why you may not see Unread
Meta said the filters began rolling out on April 16, 2024 and would reach everyone “in the coming weeks.” That wording described a staged rollout, so accounts did not necessarily receive the interface simultaneously. Current WhatsApp documentation lists the feature, but the cited sources do not provide one universal troubleshooting sequence for every account or app version.
If the filter bar is absent, first confirm that you are looking at the Chats tab and that WhatsApp is updated through your device’s official app store. If the interface still differs, availability may depend on the account’s rollout state, platform or app version; avoid assuming that reinstalling will guarantee access.

How custom Lists fit in
WhatsApp later expanded chat organization with customizable Lists. Lists let you create and edit groups of selected chats from the filter bar, while Unread remains a preset view based on message status. They solve different problems: Unread automatically surfaces conversations needing attention, whereas a custom List is a user-defined collection such as family, work or a project. WhatsApp explains the newer feature in “Focus on What Matters With Custom Lists.”

Limits to keep in mind
- Unread is conversation-based: it shows chats that contain qualifying messages rather than creating a message-by-message queue.
- Opening a conversation can remove it from the Unread view when no qualifying unread messages remain; marking it unread can make it appear again.
- WhatsApp has published no official adoption, time-saving or performance statistic for this filter in the cited sources.
