No confirmed YouTube homepage test removed view counts and upload dates. The image circulated in October 2024 was reported as an unofficial appearance that certain browser extensions could produce. TeamYouTube reportedly said the layout was not an official experiment. YouTube’s genuine August 2026 change concerns how public views are counted, not whether homepage metadata is displayed.
What the October 2024 screenshot actually showed
A screenshot shared online appeared to show YouTube’s homepage with video view counts and upload dates missing. A report published by 9to5Google on October 30, 2024 said TeamYouTube had explained that the layout was not being tested by YouTube and that browser extensions could cause the appearance.
The report did not identify a particular extension. It associated the image with a post from VidIQ, but said the screenshot’s original source was not known. That leaves no verified evidence of a YouTube-controlled rollout, experiment group, duration or percentage of users.
Could an extension change your homepage?
Yes. An extension that modifies YouTube’s page structure or hides metadata can make view counts and dates disappear locally while other viewers continue to see them. Because no specific extension was identified publicly, it is not possible to name the responsible add-on from the screenshot alone.

Checks to make if your counts or dates are missing
- Open YouTube in a private or incognito window where extensions are disabled by default.
- Compare the page in another browser or on a device without your usual extensions.
- Temporarily disable YouTube-related extensions, especially layout, productivity, ad-blocking or creator-tool add-ons, then reload the homepage.
- Re-enable extensions one at a time to identify whether one changes the display.
- Update or remove an extension only if you trust its developer and understand the effect; the screenshot does not establish that any particular extension is safe or responsible.
The separate August 2026 view-count change
Beginning August 24, 2026, YouTube changed its public view methodology so that a view is counted when a video starts playing, from the first frame. TeamYouTube described the rule in its official support announcement, updated August 27, 2026: “Beginning on 8/24/2026, a view will be counted the moment a video begins to play—from the very first frame.”
This is a counting-policy change, not a homepage redesign. It does not confirm that YouTube tested hiding view counts or upload dates. YouTube says the previous metric remains available in Analytics as engaged views and continues to matter for monetization eligibility and earnings.

What viewers should use when choosing videos
When the homepage displays them normally, upload dates still provide recency context and public view counts provide a broad popularity signal. Neither metric proves that a video is accurate, useful or worth watching. If both disappear only in one browser, test extensions before treating the change as a YouTube-wide rollout.
| Event | What is established | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| October 2024 screenshot | Reported as an unofficial appearance; TeamYouTube attributed possible cases to browser-extension behavior. | A YouTube homepage experiment, a global rollout, or a known responsible extension. |
| August 24, 2026 counting update | Public views count from the moment playback begins; engaged views remain in Analytics and relevant to monetization. | Removal of homepage view counts or upload dates. |
Bottom line
The “homepage without view counts and dates” image was not confirmed as a YouTube test. Treat it as a screenshot potentially produced by an extension, and troubleshoot your browser if you see the same layout. The later official change altered view-count methodology only; it did not remove those homepage signals.
