Claude Code can be started from Slack by mentioning Claude and describing a coding task. When the request is recognized as coding work, Anthropic routes it to a remote Claude Code session on claude.com/code. The session uses the Slack conversation as bounded context, works only with repositories you have authenticated to Claude Code on the web, posts progress in the Slack thread, and returns a link to the completed session plus a direct pull-request link when one is available.
This is different from asking Claude to draft a message or answer a question in Slack. Names, plan access and rollout status are changing: Anthropic says the earlier Claude in Slack experience moved to Claude Tag on August 3, 2026, and Claude Tag is currently described as beta for Team and Enterprise plans.
What the Claude Code Slack integration does
The integration turns Slack into an entry point for remote coding work. You mention @Claude in a channel or thread, explain the bug, feature or maintenance task, and Claude starts a Claude Code web session rather than attempting the work entirely inside Slack. Anthropic describes the flow as remote execution with progress updates and completion handoff: Claude for Slack and Anthropic’s Claude Code and Slack announcement.
Repository selection is limited to repositories already authenticated to your Claude Code account on the web. A Slack mention does not grant access to every repository in your organization, and it does not replace repository or workspace authorization.
#1 Best Overall
When the work finishes, Slack receives an update linking to the Claude Code session. Anthropic also documents a direct pull-request link, so the handoff can move from the Slack thread to review in your normal code-hosting workflow.
What you need before using it
- A Slack workspace where the Claude app is installed and permitted. An owner, administrator or integration administrator may need to approve installation, especially for Enterprise organizations.
- A connected Claude account in Slack.
- Access to Claude Code on the web, with the repositories you want Claude to use authenticated there.
- A plan and rollout that support the particular Slack experience your organization is using. Anthropic’s product material discusses Claude for Slack on paid plans, while its Slack connector documentation identifies Team or Enterprise for bringing Slack context into Claude. The separate Claude Tag help page describes Tag as beta on Team and Enterprise.
Because these labels and entitlements can change, verify the current status in the Slack setup guide and Claude Tag help page before deployment.

How to install and connect Claude in Slack
- Install the app. An authorized workspace member opens the Claude listing in the Slack Marketplace, installs it and grants the requested Slack access.
- Connect your Claude account. In Slack, open the workspace’s Apps area, select Claude and complete the account-connection flow.
- Choose where Claude can participate. You can send Claude a direct message or add it to a channel. For team work, use a channel or thread where the relevant discussion is already taking place.
- Confirm Claude Code web access. Sign in to Claude Code on the web and authenticate the repositories that the remote session may use. The Slack integration can choose among those authenticated repositories; it cannot infer authorization from a mention alone.
- Check organization controls. Enterprise organizations may have an owner, admin or integration admin install the app at organization level and select which workspaces or users receive access.
These installation and account steps are documented by Slack. Your workspace may present different labels if an administrator has restricted app installation or if the rollout has changed.
How to start a coding task from Slack
Use a channel mention
Mention @Claude in the channel and state the repository-level outcome you want. Include the symptom, expected behavior, relevant file or service, acceptance criteria and any testing requirement. A channel mention can use the 20 most recent messages as context, according to Slack’s help documentation.
Rank #3
Use a thread mention
Reply in the thread that contains the bug report or feature discussion, then mention @Claude. Slack says a thread mention may use the 50 most recent replies. Threads are therefore useful when the requirements, logs and decisions are already grouped together, and Claude responds in that same thread.
Point Claude at a specific message or resource
Recent-message context is bounded. If the key requirement is older or lives elsewhere, include a link to the specific Slack message or resource rather than assuming Claude can see the entire channel history. Keep sensitive material out of the prompt unless your workspace and repository policies permit its use.
Rank #4
Write a task that can be reviewed
Ask for a concrete change, identify the repository or component when known, and define what “done” means. For example: “Investigate the failing checkout timeout in the payments service, add a regression test, run the relevant test suite, and open a pull request with the findings.” Claude decides how to proceed inside the repositories available to your authenticated Claude Code web account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What context Claude can see
| Where you mention Claude | Documented recent context | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Channel | 20 most recent messages | A new request with the immediate discussion in view |
| Thread | 50 most recent replies | A bug or feature conversation with requirements and follow-up details |
Slack’s limits are context limits, not guarantees that Claude understands every message or that older content is included. Link directly to an older message or resource when it matters. Repository context is separately controlled by the repositories authenticated to Claude Code on the web.

What happens after you send the request
- Claude identifies whether the mention is a coding request.
- For a recognized coding task, it starts a remote Claude Code session on claude.com/code.
- The session selects from your authenticated repositories and works asynchronously.
- Progress updates are posted back to the Slack channel or thread.
- On completion, Slack receives a link to the session and, where the workflow produces one, a direct pull-request link for review.
The official sources document this routing and handoff, but they do not publish independent figures for accuracy, time saved or productivity. Treat the integration as a workflow and review the generated changes in your normal development process.
Plan, naming and rollout caveats
“Claude in Slack,” the Slack connector for Claude, and “Claude Tag” are related but not interchangeable labels. Anthropic’s product page describes Claude for Slack and its connector; Slack’s help page documents installation and context behavior; Claude’s help center says the earlier experience switched to Claude Tag on August 3, 2026 and currently marks Tag as beta on Team and Enterprise. Do not assume that one statement establishes universal access to every feature. Check the plan, workspace approval and current rollout for your organization in the linked official documentation.
Quick Recap
Practical safeguards for teams
- Put acceptance criteria and test commands in the request so the resulting change is reviewable.
- Use a thread for incident or bug work so the relevant replies remain together.
- Link to older decisions, tickets or logs that fall outside the 20-message or 50-reply windows.
- Authenticate only the repositories the user is permitted to expose to Claude Code.
- Require normal code review, testing and security checks before merging a pull request.
