Yes, scientists have made cockroaches respond to wireless commands, but “remote-controlled” is shorthand. The published systems stimulate peripheral nerves or leg-control pathways to bias movements such as turning and forward locomotion. They do not place a general-purpose chip in a cockroach’s brain or give an operator unrestricted control over its behavior.
What is actually wired to the cockroach?
These devices are biohybrid robotics prototypes: electrodes or stimulators are positioned near neural pathways, while batteries, radios, cameras and other electronics ride on the insect’s body. Depending on the design, stimulation targets an antenna nerve, cerci or pathways that control the legs. The resulting pulses act more like directional commands than a complete behavioral remote-control channel.
The operator sends a wireless instruction, the stimulator delivers a programmed pulse train, and the cockroach’s own nervous system and muscles produce the movement. Turning is therefore a controlled bias in locomotion, not mechanical steering of every leg.
Three systems behind the headline
The 2016 brain-computer-interface system
A 2016 PLOS One study connected a human brain-computer interface (BCI) to a cockroach microstimulator. The human operator’s steady-state visual evoked-potential EEG was used to decode an intended movement. Bluetooth then sent that command to a portable stimulator, which applied pulse trains through the cockroach’s antenna nerve.

This is not a brain implant in the insect. The “brain-computer” part refers to the person supplying the command; the cockroach received peripheral-nerve stimulation.
RIKEN’s solar-rechargeable Madagascar hissing cockroach
In 2022, RIKEN researchers reported a wireless locomotion-control package on the Madagascar hissing cockroach, Gromphadorhina portentosa. A 3D-printed elastic backpack on the thorax held the wireless leg-control module and a lithium-polymer battery. An ultrathin organic solar cell was attached to the abdomen for recharging.

The solar module was 4 micrometres thick and produced 17.2 mW under the paper’s simulated-sunlight conditions. RIKEN reported that the backpack remained stably mounted for more than one month. The layout separated rigid electronics on the thorax from a very soft abdominal solar device so the system could accommodate the insect’s body deformation during locomotion.
“Considering the deformation of the thorax and abdomen during basic locomotion, a hybrid electronic system of rigid and flexible elements in the thorax and ultrasoft devices in the abdomen appears to be an effective design for cyborg cockroaches,” said Kenjiro Fukuda, a senior research scientist at RIKEN.

CameraRoach
CameraRoach added situational awareness to neural stimulation. A Madagascar hissing cockroach carried a printed-circuit-board backpack with a high-resolution wireless camera. An operator used a joystick while a neural stimulator guided movement, and Wi-Fi transmitted live images back to the operator.
That camera link is why CameraRoach is often discussed in connection with first-person exploration and search-and-rescue concepts: the operator can receive a view from the insect while steering its general movement.

Can a cyborg cockroach really turn left or right?
Yes, within the conditions of the demonstrations. Stimulation is timed and applied asymmetrically so that the insect’s natural locomotion is biased toward a commanded turn or route. The system does not guarantee that the cockroach will follow an arbitrary path: its legs, body, surroundings and uncommanded behavior still affect the result.
Reliability figures need careful qualification. A Li and Zhang 2016 chapter associated with the BCI work reported average success rates above 85% for single human-BCI and cyborg reactions. The same account reported only 20% success for walking along preset tracks. Those numbers describe particular tests and should not be treated as a general reliability rate for all cyborg-cockroach systems.

Are the insects being prepared for search and rescue?
Search and rescue is a proposed application, not evidence of routine field deployment. CameraRoach explicitly frames its camera-equipped design around search and rescue, while RIKEN discusses environmental monitoring and inspection of dangerous areas. A small insect could potentially enter spaces that are difficult or unsafe for a person, but the cited demonstrations remain laboratory prototypes with limited control and payloads.
Is the chip inside the cockroach’s brain?
Not in the way the headline suggests. The reported systems use stimulators and electrodes near peripheral neural structures, along with body-mounted electronics. The cockroach’s brain is not described as being replaced, connected to a general-purpose wireless computer, or made directly programmable. “Wired to the nervous system” is a useful shorthand for targeted neural stimulation, not whole-animal mind control.
Can you buy a RoboRoach or build the same setup?
Historical RoboRoach educational documentation exists, but no current consumer product equivalent to the published systems was established. In particular, there is no verified current Amazon listing that reproduces the BCI, solar-rechargeable RIKEN platform or CameraRoach.
Buying a miniature camera, radio board or flexible solar component would not recreate these experiments. The published demonstrations require custom stimulators, carefully positioned electrodes, wireless control electronics, mechanical mounting and specialized insect handling. Generic robotics parts do not provide the neural-interface design or validated control behavior reported in the studies.
The practical takeaway
Scientists have demonstrated wireless, directional control of cockroach locomotion by stimulating neural pathways while carrying electronics on the insect. The most advanced examples combine that control with rechargeable power or live video, making them interesting platforms for hazardous-area inspection concepts. They are still constrained research prototypes—not brain implants, not unrestricted remote control and not consumer robots.
