Drake removed his AI-assisted diss track “Taylor Made Freestyle” from social media after Tupac Shakur’s estate sent a cease-and-desist letter threatening legal action. The public record shows a demand and a subsequent takedown—not a court ruling that the song was illegal, and not a confirmed lawsuit or settlement.

Why Drake removed “Taylor Made Freestyle”

“Taylor Made Freestyle” was a Drake social-media release aimed at Kendrick Lamar. It used AI-generated vocal imitations of Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. Billboard reported that Drake took the track down after Tupac’s estate objected and threatened legal action. Representatives for Drake and the estate declined to comment after the removal.

The track appeared during the 2024 Drake–Kendrick Lamar feud, after Drake’s “Push Ups” and before Lamar’s “Euphoria,” according to the Associated Press.

The April 2024 timeline

Date Event
April 19, 2024 Drake posted “Taylor Made Freestyle” on social media, according to contemporaneous reporting.
April 24, 2024 Howard E. King, representing Tupac Shakur’s estate, sent Drake a letter demanding removal and threatening legal remedies.
April 25, 2024 The letter required Drake to confirm by noon Pacific that he had removed the track from platforms he controlled and had taken steps to remove it elsewhere.
April 25–26, 2024 Billboard reported that the song had been removed from Drake’s social accounts. The available coverage does not establish an exact removal hour.

What Tupac’s estate alleged

King’s letter said the estate was “deeply dismayed and disappointed by your unauthorized use of Tupac’s voice and personality.” It asserted that the imitation violated publicity and personality rights and raised possible copyright claims involving recordings owned by the estate.

Voice and personality rights

The estate’s position was that using a recognizable imitation of Tupac’s voice and persona could improperly exploit his identity. The letter also argued that listeners might wrongly believe Tupac or his estate endorsed Drake’s lyrics. Those are allegations made in a demand letter, not findings by a judge.

Possible copyright issues

The letter said the estate would consider copyright claims connected to recordings it owned and asked how the sound-alike was created. It demanded the names of the people or company involved, along with information about recordings or other data used to produce the imitation.

Billboard noted that applying publicity rights and copyright law to AI-generated vocals in a creative work was legally unsettled. The relevant legal outcome would depend on facts such as the production method, any source recordings, the jurisdiction and available defenses.

Did Tupac’s estate sue Drake?

The sources establish a threatened lawsuit, not a filed complaint. They do not report a court ruling, disclosed settlement or judicial determination that “Taylor Made Freestyle” infringed the estate’s rights. Drake’s removal followed the threat, but a takedown alone does not establish liability.

Was the AI Tupac voice illegal?

There is no court decision in the available record answering that question. The estate claimed the use was unauthorized and potentially actionable; Billboard described the legal treatment of AI-generated vocal performances as uncertain. Whether a particular imitation violates publicity, personality or copyright rights would require a fact-specific legal analysis rather than a conclusion based solely on the song’s removal.

What remains unknown

  • The reporting does not identify the AI tool used to make the vocals.
  • It does not identify the tool’s operator or establish what training data, if any, was used.
  • It does not establish an exact time for the social-media removal.
  • The estate’s letter said the record had generated “well more than one million streams,” but that was the estate’s assertion, not an independently verified figure.

The practical significance for AI music

The dispute illustrates why an AI-generated performance can raise more than one legal question. A voice imitation may implicate identity-based rights even when no original vocal track is copied, while using protected recordings as inputs could create a separate copyright dispute. The letter in this case raised both theories, but the public record does not resolve either one.
