What Powered the 2015 Chromecast 2? Marvell’s ARMADA 1500 Mini Plus Explained

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s second-generation Chromecast, announced on October 5, 2015, used Marvell’s ARMADA 1500 Mini Plus system-on-chip (SoC), model 88DE3006. It combined two ARM Cortex-A7 CPU cores with dedicated multimedia and security functions, and worked alongside Marvell’s separate Avastar 88W8887 wireless chip. Marvell claimed 2.5 times the CPU performance of the first Chromecast’s ARMADA 1500 Mini (88DE3005), but Chromecast 2 remained a 1080p cast receiver—not a full Android TV box.

Marvell’s announcement describes the silicon used in both Chromecast 2.0 and Chromecast Audio. This is a historical 2015 hardware story; Google’s current documentation focuses on later Chromecast with Google TV products and Google TV Streamer hardware at Google’s Chromecast specifications page.

What Google and Marvell announced

On October 5, 2015, Marvell announced that Google’s Chromecast 2.0 used its ARMADA 1500 Mini Plus platform. The exact SoC designation was 88DE3006. The same announcement covered Chromecast Audio, although that product served wireless audio rather than HDMI video.

The ARMADA chip was the main multimedia processor. Wireless connectivity came from the companion Avastar 88W8887, which Marvell identified as supporting 802.11ac WLAN, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Keeping the radio in a separate chip is important: “powered by Marvell” did not mean every function was inside the ARMADA package.

What an SoC did inside Chromecast 2

An SoC (system-on-chip) combines the principal computing blocks required by a device in one package. In a small, USB-powered HDMI dongle, that integration reduces board space and power requirements while allowing the hardware and firmware to be designed as a single platform.

CPU cores

The 88DE3006 had two ARM Cortex-A7 cores. “Dual-core” simply means two general-purpose CPU cores that can run work concurrently. Cortex-A7 was designed for low-power embedded products, not for the performance level of a contemporary flagship phone or a modern streaming box.

Two cores could give Chromecast more headroom for setup, casting control, network handling and background tasks than a single-core design. They did not, however, make every operation twice as fast, and core count alone does not determine video quality.

Multimedia and security hardware

The ARMADA 1500 Mini Plus was more than a CPU. Its multimedia-oriented design handled audio, video and graphics functions, including support targeted at 1080p HD playback. Hardware video paths are particularly important in a streamer because dedicated decoding is more efficient than asking general-purpose CPU cores to process every frame.

The WiiM Pro Plus is also compatible with Google and Siri Voice Assistants, allowing you to control your device using voice commands through your phone, HomePod, or Google Home.

Marvell also listed support for the Verimatrix, Widevine and PlayReady DRM systems. DRM lets subscription services keep playback in a protected path from the app through decoding and output. Naming a DRM technology does not guarantee that every service worked on the device: Google’s software, regional licensing and each provider’s app support still determined availability.

ARMADA 1500 Mini versus Mini Plus

Area First-generation Chromecast Chromecast 2
Marvell SoC ARMADA 1500 Mini, 88DE3005 ARMADA 1500 Mini Plus, 88DE3006
CPU description Earlier ARMADA platform Dual-core ARM Cortex-A7
CPU performance Baseline for comparison Marvell claimed 2.5× the prior platform’s CPU performance
Wireless companion Older Wi-Fi implementation Avastar 88W8887 with 802.11ac, Bluetooth and BLE
Video target 1080p-class streaming 1080p-class streaming
Product role Cast receiver Faster, more connected cast receiver

The 2.5× figure is Marvell’s claimed CPU-performance improvement over the 88DE3005 platform, not an independently measured application benchmark. It should not be translated into a guaranteed 2.5× reduction in launch time or buffering.

Why the Avastar 88W8887 mattered

Chromecast relies on the network to receive commands and stream content. The Avastar 88W8887 added 802.11ac capability, a newer Wi-Fi generation for 2015, plus Bluetooth and BLE. That could improve the device’s ability to communicate in modern home networks and support accessory or setup functions.

802.11ac is a capability, not a guaranteed throughput figure. Router support, band selection, interference, distance, antenna design and the broadband connection all affect actual performance. A Chromecast 2 that buffered could still be suffering from a crowded 2.4 GHz channel or poor placement rather than an overloaded CPU.

What users were likely to notice

  • More responsive startup and control: Additional CPU headroom could make receiver setup, casting commands and transitions feel quicker.
  • More simultaneous-work capacity: The platform had room to handle network, DRM, media and user-interface tasks without relying entirely on one general-purpose core.
  • Improved wireless capability: 802.11ac support could help on compatible networks, subject to local conditions.
  • Efficient 1080p playback: Dedicated multimedia hardware was suited to the product’s HD target while keeping power consumption appropriate for USB operation.

Marvell’s announcement establishes the platform features and its claimed CPU improvement. It does not establish a specific percentage gain in real-world buffering, app launch times or playback reliability.

What Chromecast 2 did not change

It was not a 4K streamer

The announced platform was optimized for 1080p HD. Chromecast 2 was an evolutionary upgrade for HD casting, not a resolution jump to 4K. Actual playback also depended on the service, file or stream, HDMI display and network conditions.

It was not a traditional Android TV box

Chromecast’s defining model was “cast” control from a phone, tablet or computer. It did not provide the full on-device app grid, local browsing and bundled remote associated with Android TV products. The SoC’s multimedia capability should not be read as evidence that Chromecast 2 was a general-purpose Android TV device.

It did not eliminate network and software limits

Weak Wi-Fi, an underpowered USB supply, router isolation or service-specific software could still prevent smooth use. Hardware capability also could not guarantee indefinite app or firmware support as services changed.

Common problems and the right place to troubleshoot

Buffering despite the faster chip

Check router placement, channel congestion, 2.4 GHz interference, broadband speed and the Chromecast’s USB power source before blaming the ARMADA processor. The faster SoC cannot compensate for a weak wireless link.

Chromecast does not appear on the phone

Confirm that the phone and Chromecast are on the same network, client isolation is disabled, the dongle has power and the television is set to the correct HDMI input.

1080p playback fails or looks unstable

Verify the HDMI input and power adapter, then check network conditions and the streaming service’s own device limitations. A listed 1080p capability is a platform target, not a promise that every stream works identically.

An older app no longer works

Treat that as a software or service-support issue. It does not overturn the identification of the 88DE3006 hardware.

Chromecast 2 in today’s product context

Google’s current documentation groups legacy Chromecast devices alongside later families such as Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer at support.google.com/chromecast/answer/3046409. Those newer products use remote-based Google TV interfaces and are distinct from the phone-controlled casting model of the 2015 Chromecast 2.

For a modern replacement, Google TV Streamer is the current Google-branded direction, with 4K HDR output, Android TV OS, 4 GB of memory, 32 GB of storage, Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.1 and Matter/Thread support according to Google’s specifications. Chromecast with Google TV offers 4K and HD variants with a remote and on-device apps, but availability should be checked because it is an older product family. Official purchasing information is at store.google.com.

Neither product is a like-for-like continuation of Chromecast 2’s minimalist design. Used Chromecast 2 hardware may still suit inexpensive basic casting, but its age, accessories, network reliability and service compatibility matter more than the historical appeal of its Marvell chip.

Bottom line

Chromecast 2 used Marvell’s dual-core Cortex-A7 ARMADA 1500 Mini Plus 88DE3006, paired with the Avastar 88W8887 wireless chip. The upgrade brought more processing headroom, 802.11ac-era connectivity, 1080p multimedia support and commercial DRM integration. Its significance was evolutionary: it made a low-power casting dongle more responsive and capable while preserving the original 1080p, phone-controlled Chromecast concept.
