The fastest way to restrict cross-company app tracking on a US iPhone is Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, then turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apps that would request permission are treated as though you selected Ask App Not to Track. This limits a specific type of tracking across other companies’ apps, websites and services—it does not make you anonymous or stop an app from collecting information inside its own service.
Use the broader audit below for location, photos, contacts, camera, microphone, Bluetooth, local-network access, Safari and account sharing. Menu names can vary slightly by iOS version, language, account age and device-management policy; the paths below match Apple’s current iOS 26 documentation, checked August 18, 2026.
1. Turn off tracking requests for every app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Tracking.
- Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track and confirm if asked.
Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT), introduced in iOS 14.5, covers linking information from an app with information from other companies’ apps, websites or services for advertising, advertising measurement or data-broker sharing. Review individual apps
Stay on Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking to review apps that have requested permission. Switch an individual app off or on. An app may not appear until it has requested ATT permission, so an absent app is not proof that it collects no data.

If the switch is unavailable
Apple may restrict the master control for child accounts or users under 18 (depending on region), school or business-managed Apple Accounts, supervised devices or configuration profiles, and Apple Accounts created within the previous three days. Apple says apps still cannot access the device’s advertising identifier when tracking is disabled. A greyed-out control therefore does not by itself show that tracking is active.
2. Understand what ATT does—and does not—control
Cross-company tracking
ATT addresses cross-company linking for advertising, measurement and data-broker purposes. It does not promise that every advertisement disappears or that every form of profiling stops.
First-party collection
An app can still record activity within its own service, personalize content, run internal analytics, retain account data or use information you provide directly. Device settings do not change a third-party account’s privacy choices; use that service’s account controls or website. Apple explains this distinction in its app-privacy overview.
Separate permissions
Tracking permission is independent from access to location, photos, contacts, microphone, camera, Bluetooth and the local network. Denying one does not automatically deny the others.

3. Audit sensitive permissions
Open Settings → Privacy & Security, choose a category and remove access that does not match an app’s purpose. Apple documents these controls in About privacy and Location Services.

Photos can contain faces, documents, timestamps and location metadata; contacts expose relationships and identifying details; Bluetooth and Local Network access can reveal or interact with nearby devices. Restricting a permission limits that operating-system access but does not make an app inherently safe.
4. Tighten Location Services
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
- Review every app and choose Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share or While Using the App as appropriate.
- Turn off Precise Location when an approximate area is sufficient.
- Open System Services and review those controls separately.
Location Services can use GPS, cellular networks, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Background access can continue when an app is not visible; iPhone may periodically remind you and show those locations on a map. Precise Location improves navigation, rideshare pickup, delivery, geofencing and some emergency features, while turning it off supplies an approximate area. Emergency-call location may still be used for safety even when Location Services is disabled. Details are in Apple’s location documentation.
5. Turn on App Privacy Report
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → App Privacy Report.
- Tap Turn On App Privacy Report.
- Return after several days and inspect sensor access, app network activity, website network activity and frequently contacted domains.
The report starts collecting only after activation, covers a rolling previous seven days and is encrypted and stored on the iPhone. Turning it off clears its data. See Apple’s privacy-features guide and App Privacy Report help.

Interpret domains carefully
An unfamiliar domain may be the app’s own service, an analytics or advertising provider, crash reporting, a content-delivery network, authentication, payment, maps or an embedded website. Match the domain to what you were doing, check the app’s App Store privacy disclosures and account settings, then revoke excessive permissions or delete the app if its behavior remains unnecessary or unexpected. App Privacy Report is an audit of access and network activity, not proof that a domain is malicious or that every transfer is visible.
6. Check camera and microphone indicators
Review Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and Microphone. A green indicator appears when the camera is in use, including simultaneous microphone use. Deny access that has no clear purpose and recheck after installing or updating apps. An unexpected indicator warrants investigation of permissions and App Privacy Report, but alone does not prove compromise; legitimate system or app features can activate a sensor. 7. Secure Safari
On current iOS, open Settings → Apps → Safari and review:
- Prevent Cross-Site Tracking to limit third-party cookies and data.
- Hide IP Address to protect your address from known trackers; iCloud+ provides broader tracker and website protection in Safari.
- Fraudulent Website Warning.
- Website permissions for camera, microphone and location.
Safari’s on-page Privacy Report summarizes trackers encountered and prevented on the current page. These settings affect Safari, not every third-party app or another browser. See Apple’s Safari privacy guide.

8. Decide whether iCloud Private Relay fits
If you subscribe to iCloud+, go to Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Private Relay. Private Relay primarily protects Safari browsing and certain unencrypted internet traffic by sending traffic through two separate relays, so no single party—including Apple—can see both your identity and the sites you visit. It is not a whole-device VPN, does not hide activity from a site where you are logged in and does not stop an app’s direct data collection. Choose Maintain General Location or Use Country and Time Zone. The broader option reduces location precision but can affect localized services. Some sites, networks and rate-limited systems may fail with Relay. In Safari, temporarily choose Show IP Address for a site if necessary; your network provider can then see which site you are browsing. Apple documents exceptions at Manage Private Relay.
9. Use Safety Check when another person may have access
For suspected unwanted sharing, surveillance or an exposed passcode, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check. Safety Check requires iOS 16 or later, a signed-in Apple Account with two-factor authentication; Screen Time or mobile-device-management restrictions can limit options. Emergency Reset
Stops sharing with people and apps, reviews connected devices and verification numbers, and can help change your Apple Account password and device-security settings.

Manage Sharing & Access
Reviews sharing with specific people and apps, connected devices, trusted numbers, passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, synced computers and certain iPhone Mirroring connections.
Safety Check does not cover every external account, social-media setting, non-Apple password or device using another Apple Account. In a coercive-control or domestic-abuse situation, consider whether changing settings could alert the other person and make a safety plan first.
10. What these settings cannot stop
- Activity collected inside an app’s own service.
- Profiling tied to an account where you are logged in.
- Contextual advertising and information you voluntarily submit.
- Tracking in a different browser or on websites outside Safari’s controls.
- Cellular, Wi-Fi and other network records held outside these iPhone permissions.
- Every form of analytics, even when ATT is disabled.
If ads remain targeted after ATT is off, inspect the app or service’s advertising-personalization, activity-history and data-sharing controls. A VPN is a separate network-routing product; it does not stop logged-in identification, first-party collection or already-authorized permission use.
11. Reset permissions without erasing the iPhone
For a clean start on system permission choices, use Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Location & Privacy. This resets iOS permission decisions; it does not delete accounts, app data, third-party permissions or the device itself.
