This restores location and privacy permission decisions without erasing photos, apps, messages, files, or other personal content. The steps are effectively the same on iPhone 17, iPhone 16, and compatible iPad models because the control is part of the operating system.
What “Reset Location & Privacy” does
The reset removes the permission decisions stored on the device and returns them to their defaults. That can include access to:

- Precise versus approximate location choices.
- Camera, microphone, contacts, calendars, photos, Bluetooth, Local Network, Health, HomeKit, Files and Folders, Motion & Fitness, and other protected categories.
Apps must request protected information again before using it. The reset changes device permissions; it does not necessarily delete an account’s history, cloud data, or information a third-party service already collected. See Apple’s explanation of privacy and Location Services.
Reset Location & Privacy on iPhone 17 or iPhone 16
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Choose Reset Location & Privacy.
- Confirm the action and authenticate with your device passcode if requested.
Use the same path on either iPhone generation. Apple’s current iPhone guide documents these reset choices for iOS 26 at Reset iPhone settings to their defaults.

Reset Location & Privacy on iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPad.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Location & Privacy.
- Confirm and enter the passcode if prompted.
The only notable wording difference is “Transfer or Reset iPad” instead of “Transfer or Reset iPhone.”
What happens after the reset
When an app next requests protected information, iOS or iPadOS can show a permission prompt again. Depending on the app and software version, choices may include Allow Once, Allow While Using App, or Don’t Allow. Some apps offer fewer choices.

Temporarily turn off all Location Services
Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and switch it off. Maps, navigation, Weather, Camera features, and other apps may be limited. Apple says location information may still be used for emergency calls. Details are in Apple’s privacy and Location Services guidance.

Apple says this clears significant locations across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. See Clear your location history in Maps.
Change advertising-tracking permissions
App Tracking Transparency is separate. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking to change an individual app or switch off Allow Apps to Request to Track. See Control app tracking permissions.

Review location sharing
Resetting app permissions does not automatically stop location shared through Find My, Family Sharing, Messages, Maps, an Apple Account, or a third-party account. Review those services separately if another person or service can still see your location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the reset compares with other reset options
| Option | What it changes | Personal data erased? |
|---|---|---|
| Reset Location & Privacy | Location and privacy permission decisions | No |
| Reset All Settings | Broader preferences, networks, privacy settings, VPN configurations, Apple Pay cards, notifications, and more | No |
| Erase All Content and Settings | Removes the device’s contents and settings for a transfer or sale | Yes |
Apple’s Reset All Settings guidance notes that personal data remains, but Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, preferences, and other configuration may need to be set up again. Choose that broader option only when you intend to reset those settings. Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings for an ordinary permission problem.
Troubleshooting after the reset
No permission prompt appears
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and verify the global switch is on.
- Open the app’s entry and select an appropriate access level.
- Turn on Precise Location if exact positioning is required.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then restart the device.
- Install any available update for the app and check the developer’s requirements.
The reset option is missing
Menu labels can differ on older operating-system versions. Also, an organization-supervised device or configuration profile may restrict changes. Check under Settings → General → Transfer or Reset [device], and contact the administrator if the iPhone or iPad is managed.
Location remains inaccurate
Confirm the app has the required permission, enable Precise Location when needed, and check Settings → General → Date & Time for an appropriate automatic time setting. Hardware and signal conditions also affect location accuracy. GPS is available on iPad Wi‑Fi + Cellular models; Wi‑Fi-only iPads use available Wi‑Fi and other relevant signals.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen this reset is the right choice
- Several apps have stale or incorrect permissions.
- Permission prompts no longer appear as expected.
- Location-dependent features fail across multiple apps.
- You want to review privacy decisions from the beginning without deleting content.
If the goal is deleting location history, stopping Find My sharing, changing ad tracking, or preparing the device for sale, use the separate control described above instead.
