What Does “Bop” Mean on TikTok? Song Slang, Insult, and “Lala Bop” Explained

On TikTok, bop has two very different meanings. “This song is a bop” is normally praise for a catchy track; calling a person “a bop” is usually a sexualized insult. The noun and surrounding words tell you which meaning is intended.

The two meanings of “bop”

“Bop” describing a song

When users write “this song is a bop,” “add this bop to your playlist,” or “that sound is a bop,” they mean the music is enjoyable, catchy, energetic, or especially good. This positive music sense is established slang and is not sexual by itself. Merriam-Webster lists it as a distinct meaning.

“Bop” describing a person

When “bop” is attached to someone’s name or directed at a person—“she’s a bop,” “he called her a bop,” or “they’re a bop”—it usually implies that the person is sexually promiscuous or posts sexually suggestive material. That use is derogatory, can be misogynistic, and may amount to public shaming or cyberbullying. It can target men or anyone else, but documented TikTok usage disproportionately targets girls and women.

Some people use the word ironically or describe themselves this way. Self-reference or joking tone can change an individual use, but it does not make the label generally neutral or appropriate for outsiders.

What do “lala bop” and “school bop” mean?

“Lala bop”

“Lala bop” is associated with the newer, sexualized TikTok usage. It is generally a label or accusation that someone is sexually promiscuous or overly immodest online. The expression is viral slang rather than a formal term with one universally agreed definition, so local communities may use it somewhat differently.

Merriam-Webster’s account links the trend to rapper Almighty Rexxo’s 2021 song “Lala Bop” and says a related TikTok trend spread in 2023. That is a documented explanation for the trend’s circulation, not proof that the song created every older or modern use of “bop.”

“School bop”

“School bop” is an insult suggesting that a person has had many sexual partners within a school or local social setting. It is not a school-approved category or an official TikTok term; it is current social-media slang used in callouts and rumors.

How to tell which meaning someone intends

Look at what the word describes and the words around it. Music terms such as song, track, beat, sound, and playlist usually signal the positive meaning. A person’s name, appearance, clothing, dating life, or videos usually signals the insult.

Comment or phrase Likely meaning
“This song is such a bop.” A catchy or enjoyable song
“Add this bop to your playlist.” A song recommendation
“She’s a bop.” A derogatory claim about a person
“He called her a bop.” An insult implying sexual promiscuity
“Lala bop.” Usually a sexualized TikTok label or callout
“School bop.” An insult alleging many sexual partners at school

One sentence can remain ambiguous. For example, “She posted a bop” might mean she posted a good song, while surrounding comments could reveal that commenters are attacking her personally. A music review almost certainly uses the positive sense; “bop” next to a person’s name should be treated as potentially abusive.

TikTok’s “Bop Meaning” topic page contains user discussions showing both interpretations. It demonstrates usage and disagreement, not an official TikTok definition.

Is “bop” the same as “slut” or “hoe”?

When aimed at a person, “bop” can function as a less explicit but still derogatory way to accuse someone of sexual promiscuity. It is not perfectly interchangeable with every profanity: the speaker, audience, tone, and context affect how severe a particular use is. The important point is that the personal TikTok meaning is generally insulting, not harmless music slang.

Why is the personal use often misogynistic?

In current TikTok usage, the label is frequently applied to girls and women to police or shame their clothing, photos, dating history, or perceived sexual behavior. That gendered pattern is why the personal sense is commonly described as misogynistic. A boy or man can also be called a bop, but the documented trend most often targets women and girls.

What to do if someone calls you a “bop”

If the comment is directed at a person rather than a song, do not repeat the accusation as though it were a fact. A calm response path is:

  1. Check the context. Confirm that the commenter is labeling a person, not praising a song.
  2. Do not escalate. Arguing can increase attention and invite more replies.
  3. Save evidence. Take screenshots if the comment is part of harassment, a pile-on, threats, or disclosure of personal information.
  4. Block or restrict the account. Use the controls available on your version of TikTok.
  5. Report the conduct. Report harassment, bullying, sexualized targeting, or unwanted exposure of private information through TikTok’s reporting tools.
  6. Get support when needed. If a minor is targeted repeatedly or threatened, involve a parent, guardian, school administrator, or another trusted adult.

TikTok’s U.S. App Store listing describes privacy and safety features including private accounts, content filters, screen-time tools, and Family Pairing: TikTok app listing. Exact controls and availability can vary by app version, account, age, device, and region, and the listing does not guarantee that every use of “bop” will be removed.

Quick examples

  • “This song is a bop.” Positive: the song is catchy or fun.
  • “That new sound is a bop.” Positive: praise for audio used in a video.
  • “She’s a bop.” Usually an insulting, sexualized label.
  • “They called him a bop.” Usually a personal accusation, although the target can be any gender.

Why definitions online seem contradictory

The positive music meaning existed alongside the newer social-media insult. Older dictionaries, music reviews, TikTok comments, and explainers may therefore appear to disagree while describing different grammatical uses. Slang also changes quickly, so “usually” and “in this context” are more accurate than claiming one permanent definition.

Bottom line

A song can be “a bop” as a compliment. Calling a person “a bop,” including in phrases such as “lala bop” or “school bop,” is usually a derogatory and often sexualized accusation. Identify what the word describes before deciding what a TikTok comment means.
